About the Organization The Houston SPCA, founded in 1924, is Houston's first and largest animal protection organization and shelter. Our mission is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. The Houston SPCA is a private, non-profit charity, funded entirely by donations, which receives no funding from the Government, United Way or national animal groups.

Primary Purpose:

Responsible for planning, developing, implementing and evaluating the organization’s summer critter camp. Oversee critter crew training, teaching, all camp preparations, and day-to-day operations to ensure all Campers experience a fun, safe and memorable experience. Promotes responsible pet ownership, compassion for all living things.

Essential Functions of the Position:

Develops, supervises, teaches humane education programs

Researches, writes and executes humane education curriculum for various age groups and audiences. Remains up to date on current trends relevant to humane education and youth programming.

Oversees all aspects of hiring, training, supervising and evaluating seasonal camp staff and volunteers.

Initiates and maintains mutually beneficial relationships with educational institutions and other community partners.

Proactively and upon request, represents the organization at education-related public speaking engagements.

Prepares and monitors marketing/promotional plan for program budget, including maintaining expenses within guidelines.

Maintains positive relationships and works collaboratively with all other departments within the Houston SPCA.

Conducts tours of the Houston SPCA to various audiences/guests and makes presentations internally as needed.

Committed to the personal growth of all Campers and ensuring a fun, safe and welcoming environment.

Knowledgeable and passionate about teaching kids

Excellent communication skills and can clearly communicate with both Campers and their parents.

Able to recognize and quickly resolve any issues that may arise between Campers, instructors and/or parents.

Represents the Houston SPCA by providing excellent customer service and focus.

Protects all confidential information and internal communications.

Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.

 

 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:

Bachelor’s degree in education, or related discipline, preferred.

5+ years of experience as a teacher, coordinator or manager in a classroom or camp environment.

Ability to work with kids in Grades 3rd – 8th.

Must have previous experience working with children and youth leading and facilitating in a group setting.

Basic understanding of animal welfare industry.

Passion for the mission of the Houston SPCA.

Ability to represent the Houston SPCA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff.

Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Houston SPCA, with volunteers and the public and be a team player.

Demonstrate patience, courtesy and work well under stressful conditions.

Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and electronic form.

Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.

Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures.

Be insurable under Houston SPCA auto policy.

Able to drive, stand, bend, squat, walk, and talk for up to eight hours a day; able to lift up to 25 pounds.

Able to work a flexible schedule including weekend and evening shifts.
