About the Organization The Houston SPCA, founded in 1924, is Houston's first and largest animal protection organization and shelter. Our mission is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. The Houston SPCA is a private, non-profit charity, funded entirely by donations, which receives no funding from the Government, United Way or national animal groups.

Description

Primary Purpose:

Responsible for various aspects of communications including but not limited to PR and marketing; community outreach and event coordination.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Ability to assist in gathering content and creatively sharing through digital mediums including the website, social media, and internal sources.
  • Pro-actively research and draft press releases that align and support the organization’s mission.
  • Maintain special event and latest news calendar with updated content.
  • Assist community outreach and education at events and on-site camps, tours.
  • Pro-actively identify and coordinate on-campus events including open houses, special events.

Knowledge, skill and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or a related discipline is required.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in a Communications or Marketing role or similar.
  • Proven experience as a communications specialist including strong writing, video and editing skills for news releases and social media content.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint Word).
  • Solid time-management capabilities with a proven ability to deal with multiple tasks.
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented with strong technical, creative and organizational skills.
  • Ability to identify potential storytelling opportunities through multimedia channels.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule including weekends and evening shifts.
  • Ability to represent the organization in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff.
  • Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the organization, as well as volunteers and the public.
  • Knowledge of non-profit organizations an asset.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
 
Position Requirements

  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented with strong technical, creative and organizational skills.
  • Ability to identify potential storytelling opportunities through multimedia

  • Ability to represent the organization in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff.
  • Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the organization, as well as volunteers and the public.
  • Knowledge of non-profit is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of Spanish is considered an asset
  • Able to drive, stand, bend, squat, walk, and talk for at least eight hours a day; able to lift up to 25 pounds.
