About the Organization The Houston SPCA, founded in 1924, is Houston's first and largest animal protection organization and shelter. Our mission is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. The Houston SPCA is a private, non-profit charity, funded entirely by donations, which receives no funding from the Government, United Way or national animal groups.

Description

Primary Purpose: Responsible for various aspects of communications including but not limited to public relations, community outreach and event coordination.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Research and draft press releases and advisories that align and support the organization's mission
  • Ability to assist in capturing a compelling story through multimedia
  • Maintain special event and latest news calendar with updated content
  • Assist community outreach at events and programs
  • Provide support for educational programs including on-site camps and tours
  • Track and coordinate bookings of all campus-related events
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, skill and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or a related discipline is required
  • At least 3 years of experience in a Communications role or similar
  • Proven experience as a communications specialist including writing and editing news releases and media alerts
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint Word)
  • Solid time-management capabilities with a proven ability to deal with multiple tasks.
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented with strong technical, creative and organizational skills.
  • Ability to identify potential storytelling opportunities through multimedia
  • Able to work a flexible schedule including occasional weekend and evening shifts.
  • Ability to represent the organization in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff.
  • Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the organization, as well as volunteers and the public.
  • Knowledge of non-profit is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of Spanish is considered an asset
  • Able to drive, stand, bend, squat, walk, and talk for at least eight hours a day; able to lift up to 25 pounds.
