Schedule 30-40 hours/week, up to 12 weeks, between May and September, 2017. May require infrequent evening or weekend hours. Schedule may vary based on operational needs.  
Pay Rate $10.10/hr.-$12.00/hr.  
Description

SUMMARY
This position supports on-going efforts to measure greenhouse gas emissions, monitor energy data, and increase resource efficiency across City government and the community. The intern will play a key role in data management and analysis, project research and development, and public outreach and communication.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This list represents the types of duties required by the position. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected.
• Perform research and prepare summaries and recommendations for energy and sustainability projects. Prepare case studies and analysis of successful projects.
• Evaluate facilities and City operations for savings opportunities.
• Support design of City’s energy and water efficiency programs by documenting procedures and policies.
• Analyze energy use data for billing errors, energy rate issues, and opportunities for efficiency or cost savings using City’s online energy management software and MS Excel.
• Provide support to Office committees and partners such as the Green Ribbon Commission, employee committee, volunteer groups, working groups, etc.
• Help manage and develop content for Office website, Facebook, Twitter, and e-newsletter.
• Support development and distribution of educational materials including printed materials, informational graphics, poster displays, and/or presentations.
• Work professionally with other City departments and the public.
• Serve as an ambassador of the Office of Sustainability and the City of South Bend.

Position Requirements

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
• Well-rounded graduate or undergraduate student or recent graduate. Business, environmental science, sustainability, public policy, architecture/landscape architecture, engineering, and construction degree programs are of particular interest.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED
• Must have demonstrated quantitative and spreadsheet management skills.
• Must be a strong writer and experienced social media user.
• Ability to conduct on-line research and summarize findings for a variety of audiences is essential.
• GIS experience a plus.

• None.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Standard office setting with some travel from site to site. Some exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain. Work environment is both formal and informal, team oriented, having variable tasks, pace, and pressure.
