WORK OBJECTIVE

Identifies, collects, and preserves evidence at a crime scene in support of law enforcement activities/investigations, and to categorize and store all evidence and/or property that is submitted to the Evidence Unit. Establish and maintain records to ensure proper chain of custody for court presentation and compliance with state statutes and department policies. Works with considerable independence and is under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Diagrams, photographs and collects evidence from crime and traffic crash scenes.
  • Photographs and fingerprints suspects, victims, witnesses and applicants.
  • Prepares court presentation of evidence and testifies in court.
  • Transport evidence/property to/from a lab, courthouse, or a disposal site.
  • Collect, inventory, categorize and store all evidence and found property in the custody of the Evidence Unit.
  • Instructs and/or trains others regarding crime scene processing techniques.
  • Produces detailed written crime scene reports.
  • Works with chemicals, powders, and body fluids using normal protective equipment according to prescribed safety standards and regulations.
  • Operates a motor vehicle requiring a standard Driver's License, and occasionally tows a trailer.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repairs on equipment, and stocks supplies.
  • Maintain confidentiality within the parameters of law enforcement ethics.
  • Performs mathematical calculations to measure speed, distance, braking, etc.
  • Performs any other task or assignment that is assigned by a supervisor.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Associate’s degree, or a minimum of 60 college credit hours, from an accredited college.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • No criminal history.
  • Must successfully pass a medical assessment exam.
  • Pass Police Department background screening.
  • Unless previously certified, must successfully complete an agency approved Field Training Program whose emphasis is on crime scene processing within twelve months from the date of hire.

 

DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES

  • Bilingual (English and Spanish), both reading and writing.
  • Knowledge of State Statutes.
  • At least one year of experience involving photography, or at least one year law enforcement experience in evidence collection, report taking, investigation, or fingerprinting.
  • Recognized certified training in the field of forensics.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement activities and the organization of a Police Department.
  • Intermediate knowledge in Adobe, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of basic tools used in maintenance and construction work.
  • Knowledge of safe collection and preservation of evidence that may be contaminated with blood borne pathogens.
  • Knowledge of camera equipment and computer operations.

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). Requires intermittent lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavier objects (100+ pounds).

 

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Tasks are performed in both indoor and outdoor environments. Due to the nature and location of the work environment, tasks include potential for prolonged exposure to disagreeable elements, e.g., heat, humidity, inclement weather, blood borne pathogens. Some tasks include working in and around moving vehicles and associated vehicle/equipment areas, where heightened awareness to surroundings and adherence to established safety precautions is essential in avoidance of injury or accidents.
