Sustainable Waste Specialist

Come join our Sustainability Team as a Sustainable Waste Management Specialist! There is one regular, full-time, benefited position available at this time. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Maintains Zoo Doo administrative records and permitting.  Conducts regular testing of compost and results analysis to ensure compliance of process and product with City, County, and State regulations.
  • Monitors all stages of compost preparations.  Determines proper mixture of feedstock to produce compost.  Directs equipment operators to transport and turn compost piles.  Monitors temperature and moisture levels.
  • Coordinates and participates in the day-to-day work assignments for laborers involved in ongoing sustainable waste management projects.
  • Leads others and performs activities including compost drying, screening, packaging, and delivery to vendors as needed.
  • Oversees compost readiness and sales, including responding to inquiries from the public, zoo partners, and press.  Organizes the bi-annual Fecal-Fest, coordinating collection and loading of compost.
  • Collects, maintains, and analyses revenue and donations information related to Zoo Doo.
  • Tracks and reports out on waste diversion from landfill at the zoo, including recycling and composting.  Maintains waste records and assists with the preparation of reports as required.
  • Acts as the zoo’s recycling and compost expert, and in-house resource for waste diversion inquires.
  • Organizes, schedules, monitors, and participates in the pickup and collection of recyclable materials by zoo staff and contracted vendors.
  • Coordinates with events staff, food service staff, and on-site vendors to make events more sustainable including reviewing food packaging and striving for ‘zero waste’ events.
  • Trains and coordinates volunteers and participates in collecting and processing organic and recycling waste from zoo events and concerts.
  • Works with zoo departments to develop public education programs and educational materials.  Plans, prepares, and conducts presentations for the public and staff, as directed.
  • Researches, analyzes, and develops methods to improve and promote waste diversion zoo-wide.  Remains current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to the field.
  • Supports implementing the zoo’s Sustainability Plan and waste management related program activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) from an accredited college or university in related filed, and four (4) or more years’ experience running a recycling and/or composting program and training in biological processes, recycling, and composting techniques; and/or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience. 
  • A valid Washington Driver’s License.
  • Compost Facility Operator Training Certificate (either through WORC or USCC) or ability to obtain certificate within one year of hire.
  • Knowledge of large-scale recycling and composting techniques and biological processes.
  • Experience in public contact work and/or experience in program coordination
  • Ability to confidently represent the zoo when dealing with the public.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekend and/or holidays.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office and basic computer skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This position must frequently lift or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds.
  • A considerable amount of walking and standing is required.
  • Some stooping and crouching is required to access items on lower shelves.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to perform essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a typical office environment and/or outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  The employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration.  This position requires working with animal feces.

Pay: $28.00 per hour, plus benefits.

A criminal background check, driving record review, pre-employment physical, and pre-employment tuberculosis test will be required of the selected applicant.
