OVERVIEW: Employees in this classification are charged with law enforcement/investigation responsibilities, and provide law enforcement/investigation services to the citizens and visitors of the Lower Elwha Tribal Community. This may include either uniformed, plain clothes, or special detail assignments. Area of responsibilities may include the standard boundaries of the Tribal Community and additional areas as dictated by need, and assignment. Work under the direction of the Chief of                              Police or Sergeant who reviews on an occasional basis for the overall                                             effectiveness of compliance with policies, tribal, state and federal laws

POSITION STATUS:              Permanent-Full time-Full Benefits          

SALARY LEVEL:                    Level 12D                 

WORK SCHEDULE:               Varies-working hours must have flexibility

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:

  1. Enforce tribal laws and ordinances

  2. Respond to citizen requests for assistance

  3. Arrest criminal code violators

  4. Monitor vehicle traffic on highways and roads within the tribal jurisdiction

  5. Investigate vehicle accidents

  6. Write reports, citations, document and maintain files, including using computers for reporting and retrieval

  7. Execute evictions and repossessions

  8. Transport inmates and juveniles to and from correctional facilities and court

  9. Search prisoner for weapons and contraband

  10. Acquire, execute and return warrants and search warrants

  11. Collect and process evidence

  12. Participation on special teams

  13. Answer telephone and letter requests from attorneys, plaintiffs and tribal court officer

  14. Testify in court

  15. Operate vehicles and other equipment, including firearms, during hours of work

  16. Intervene in domestic and mental health disturbances

  17. Maintain prompt and regular attendance

  18. Perform other work relevant to job duties as required

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must possess valid Washington State driver license

  2. High school diploma

  3. Pass background investigation, psychological exam, medical exam and polygraph

  4. No misdemeanor convictions within one year of hire date, with the exception of minor traffic offenses

  5. No Domestic Violence convictions that would prevent the applicant from carrying a Firearm under Federal or Washington State Law

  6. Must not have been convicted of any federal felony or offense punishable in Washington as a felon

  7. Excellent intrapersonal skills

  8. Ability to work independently as a cooperative member of a team

  9. Ability to handle stress in a positive manner

  10. Knowledge and understanding of client confidentiality requirements

  11. Knowledge of Lower Elwha community and resources and the ability to maintain working relationships with other community/external agencies

  12. Willingness to drive in a tribal government vehicle 

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required by Position:

  1. Knowledge of modern police practices and methods

  2. Knowledge of controlling laws and ordinances, particularly the laws of arrest and evidence

  3. Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribal Police Department

  4. Knowledge of first aid principles

  5. Ability to deal firmly and courteously with those under custody and the public

  6. Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine proper courses of action to be taken

  7. Ability to obtain information through interview, interrogation and investigation

  8. Ability to develop and maintain a working relationship with other allied departments

  9. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including using a computer to generate reports

  10. Ability to remain calm in tense and hostile situations

  11. Ability to pass certification in the use of self-contained breathing apparatus

  12. Ability to work with tribal communities and diverse populations

  13. Ability to restrain an individual and employ all uses of force options

  14. Skills in the use and care of firearms, Taser and baton

     

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Hazard of physical attack or injury

  2. Inside and outside work with exposure to weather conditions

  3. Exposure to fire, chemical, electrical, mechanical and firearm hazards

  4. Exposure to fast moving vehicles and motor vehicle accidents

  5. Ability to lift, push/pull objects weighing up to 165 pounds infrequently

  6. Ability to frequently sit or stand for long periods of time

  7. Able to read handwriting

  8. Able to deal with emotional distress

 

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

  1. Applicants will be required to successfully complete a fitness test immediately as the first stage of qualification testing. All applicants must be able to meet the Fitness Standards for entry to the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission at the time of this application

  2. Required to obtain certification from Washington State Law Enforcement Standards Board Training and legally be able to carry a firearm

  3. Must be able to comply with the LOWER ELWHA KLALLAM TRIBE Drug free workplace policies

 

As with all positions of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe this position is Indian Preference in hiring, in Accordance with P.L. 93-638.
