The Vice President of External Affairs is responsible for stewarding the Winrock brand, executing global corporate marketing initiatives, developing strategic partnerships, managing public affairs and public relations, overseeing traditional and social media, managing Winrock web properties, and overseeing our New Business processes and staff. The incumbent will be responsible for developing a strategy for diversifying Winrock’s revenue with corporate and foundation funders. In addition, the incumbent will be responsible for providing technical assistance to field programs on global marketing initiatives, strategic communications, media relations and crisis communications.  The Vice-President of External Affairs will supervise Winrock’s New Business Services group and report to the President and CEO.


  • Oversee and manage all Winrock external communications, marketing, branding and communications.

  • Develop and manage the expansion of Winrock’s work with corporations and foundations.

  • Grow existing and develop new relationships with sector-influencing media and organizations.

  • Directly liaise with government and institutional donors such as USAID, Department for International Development (DFID), German Development Bank (KfW), etc. to understand communication priorities and amplify donor messages to target audiences.

  • Collaborate with the Winrock Senior Management Team and key staff within our Programs and Operations groups to develop strategies to increase funding capacity and maximize donor relationships.

  • Provide expert guidance in identifying and crafting new partnerships with foundations that will advance Winrock’s mission.

  • Directly oversee and manage private and corporate fundraising and engagement efforts to increase Winrock’s donor base and unrestricted assets.

  • Work closely with technical teams to ensure Winrock’s external assets meet high standards of quality and enhance Winrock’s reputation as a trusted source of information.   

  • Anticipate and develop communications resources, policies and competencies to respond to crises.

  • Work closely with senior leadership, country and project offices to develop and implement integrated influence and external communications strategies; provide training to senior staff. 

  • Create and launch dynamic new vehicles to communicate Winrock’s work and initiatives.

  • Implement and maintain global branding guidelines to ensure high quality branding is in place throughout the Winrock network. 

  • Ensure Winrock’s proposal development function is working efficiently and effectively.

  • Demonstrate and maintain a strong network of contacts with the international donor and NGO communities.

  • Working closely with the President and CEO, serve as liaison to the Board of Directors, providing regular opportunities to connect board members with Winrock’s work, exploring possible new board members, and ensuring smooth transitions between board members as they arrive and depart the board.

  • 25 percent travel is anticipated.




  • Relevant post-graduate degree or equivalent experience.


  • At least fifteen years developing, executing and measuring integrated communications programs.

  • Experience leading multinational teams.

  • Familiarity with Winrock’s priority audiences: corporate partners, philanthropists, advocacy/policy experts, and traditional government and institutional donors.

  • Development and implementation of lower level and major fundraising campaigns.

  • Experience advising senior executives on strategic communications and crisis management.

  • Strong executive management and strategic planning.

  • Proven track record in developing business across diverse funders, but with a special emphasis on corporate relationship development.

  • Experience working in other countries, especially those within our focal geographies of Africa, Asia and Latin America.

  • Fluency in English required and proficiency in another language is highly desirable.
