POSITION TITLE:         Nutrition Expert


LOCATION:                             Kathmandu with travel to in Mid- and Far-West

REPORTS TO:                          KISAN Chief of Party





The overall goal of the Knowledge-based Integrated Sustainable Agriculture and Nutrition (KISAN) project to sustainably reduce poverty and hunger in Nepal by achieving inclusive growth in the agriculture sector, increasing income of farm families and improving nutritional status, especially of women and children. USAID/Nepal will implement the project over a five-year period through an integrated, whole-of-government approach of strategic agriculture and nutrition investments supporting contributions in cross-cutting areas. This Project will focus on 16 to 20 Terai and lower hill districts in the Far-Western region, Mid-Western region, and possibly the Western region of Nepal. This multifaceted Project will integrate agriculture and nutrition in order to increase agriculture production and improve the nutrition status of women and children under 5 years.




Winrock seeks a senior nutrition expert to lead the Nutrition component of the USAID/Nepal KISAN Project and be responsible for achieving the project’s targets. The Nutrition Expert will work closely with the COP to provide strategic leadership of the nutrition and WASH component of the project. The Nutrition Expert will work closely with senior members of the GON.




  • Provide strategic technical leadership and direction for the project and ensure efficient planning,

implementation and monitoring of quality program activities for nutrition; water, hygiene and

sanitation and homestead food production activities with team members and stakeholders

  • Along with COP, serve as primary point of contact for all nutrition activities
  • Provide overall technical guidance to subcontractors including Regional Nutrition Manager and

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Manager, Social Behavior Change Communication Specialist,

Monitoring & Evaluation Specialist and Regional and Homestead Food Production Coordinator

  • Ensure that KISAN agriculture and nutrition activities are fully integrated and there is strong

coordination and clear communication among subcontractors, project offices and staff

  • Develop and maintain strong linkages, in coordination with the COP and the Component B Field

Operation Manager (new position), with Government of Nepal (GON) and the GON Point of Contact in the MoHP as well as other GON counterparts (Nutrition

Technical Committee/Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP), Nutrition and Food Security

Steering Committee/National Planning Commission (NPC), Nutrition and Food Security Nutrition Secretariat, National Health, Education, Information and Communication Center) and other programs and partners working in nutrition and governance, such as Suaahara, Health For Life, UNICEF, WHO, FAO, WFP and others, as required to ensure consistency and harmonization in program implementation

  • Ensure project activities are implemented to a high degree of quality and are consistent with global nutrition best practices, relevant Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Health and Population policies and USAID Nepal’s technical direction
  • Maintain relationships with the Government of Nepal, particularly with the MOHP and the NPC to foster support and advocacy for food security and improve nutrition per the scope of the KISAN program
  • Develop advocacy plans, strategies and messages in line with MOHP policy and strategies and in

coordination with the USAID Suaahara project

  • In close coordination with the Agriculture Expert and Component B Field Operations Manager,

actively engage in high level coordination, steering and technical committee meetings; and in multisectoral nutrition and food security policy, strategy development and planning processes with the GON and other donors/stakeholders

  • Coordinate with the KISAN Point of Contact in the  Child Health Division as well as the  National Health Training Center and Ministry of Urban

Development for water, sanitation and hygiene activities

  • Assist GON counterparts to identify areas of advocacy within the GON systems for improved

implementation; participate on key child health related technical working groups such as the

Integrated Management of Childhood Illness and others

  • Manage the reporting process for Component B nutrition activities in close coordination with the

Component B Field Operations Manager
