TITLE: Sustainability Manager DEPARTMENT: Community Relations

STATUS: Full-time, Manager, At-Will, Salaried

REPORTS TO: Director of Community Relations

JOB SUMMARY: To support Outpost's Sustainability Vision through developing, implementing and maintaining sustainable processes and operations that minimize our impact on the planet, grow our connection to the local community through education and advocacy and positively contribute towards our impact in the communities where we live and work.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Business office and retail floor environment with moderate to loud noises including but not limited to computers, printers, paging, telephones, human voices, and equipment. Work near moving mechanical parts (ie: store equipment, farm equipment, tools, etc.) and in high precarious places (ie: ladders, rooftops, cranes etc.). Some field work will be required including job related travel within metro Milwaukee area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Treat people fairly, consistently, and with respect.
  2. Ensure efficient, informative, and friendly service to staff, shoppers and the outside community, according to our established service vision and standards.

  1. Primary Responsibilities


  1. Model supportive and participatory leadership qualities. Promote team-building environment within the department and stores.
  2. Treat staff and managers with consistency and fairness, in a style appropriate to a cooperative work environment.
  3. Ensure that communications are clear, direct, timely and respectful.
  4. Ensure the integrity of Outpost's stated values in decision-making and interactions with others.
  5. Use the interest-based problem-solving method to resolve issues.
  6. Act as a model to all store employees following both the union contract and employee handbook.

Sustainability Management

    1. Develop, support and manage sustainability programming and planning according to Outpost's High Five Goal of Sustainable and Principled Solutions and our Sustainability Vision.
    2. Evaluate and measure the effectiveness of the Coop sustainability strategies, programs and tactics.
    3. Coordinate the annual reporting of Sustainability goals and data as required.
    4. Lead the Sustainability Steering Committee in planning desired outcomes to meet our Vision on a co-op wide basis.
    5. Effectively manage projects that may involve multiple departments, time constraints, and external partners.
    6. Support the business with functional expertise and access adequate resources on sustainability project decisions.
    7. Organize, coordinate and support location Green Teams to affect change and positive behavior in implementing sustainability goals and practices through champions at each location.
    8. Develop and launch materials and training plans with strong support for Green teams at all locations.
    9. Effectively partner with external stakeholders to accomplish the co-ops sustainability goals while also building locally-based relationships to provide education, commitment, and advocacy for environmental action in our community.
    10. Research available grants and/or program funding to meet the co-op's desired outcomes related to sustainability and operational improvements.
    11. Work with Outpost's director of store operations to effectively implement and manage ongoing reduction of waste within our operating systems.
    12. Organize and manage store recycling programming.
    13. Participate in the annual business planning process led by the General Manager and Directors.

      Community Relationships and Advocacy
  1. Explore and report on local community food system projects that relate to urban and/or organic farms, sustainable agriculture, food hubs, food distribution channels, and marketing.
  2. Develop and/or support internal and external initiatives that lead to Outpost's participation in the local and regional food systems.
  3. Effectively partner with external stakeholders to accomplish local community food system goals.
  4. Research and organize volunteer opportunities in areas of sustainability and local food systems to meet the objectives of the co-op's give-back programming.
  5. Stay abreast of the changing marketplace and food access landscape.
  6. Maintain trade affiliations as assigned to keep the co-op active and connected to local and national sustainability, climate and agricultural initiatives.
  7. Participate in external organizations, as committee member or board seat, to further the advocacy goals of the co-op in the community.

Communication and Events

  1. Contribute educational content to Outpost publications as assigned.
  2. Develop regular and ongoing educational information on sustainability and climate change initiatives to Outpost stakeholders.
  3. Coordinate staff and public events that build community awareness around sustainable solutions.
  4. Maintain up-to-date information on Outpost's website.
  5. Assist the department in staffing store and/or community events as requested.

Community Relations Team

  1. Attend community relations team meetings as a timely and active participant.
  2. Prepare any materials needed for discussion specifically related to the primary responsibilities of the job.
  3. Participate on community relations project teams.

  1. Abide by all Co-op policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook and other company documents.
  2. Keep store/office orderly and clean.
  3. Maintain a positive attitude.
  4. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Community Relations Director.

Position Requirements


  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field or equivalent work experience in sustainability initiatives
  • Project Management experience
  • Experience with Microsoft Office including strong skills in MS Word
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Detail oriented, able to keep accurate and thorough records
  • Capable of directing several priorities and communicate professionally with governmental agencies, internal and external stakeholders, suppliers and all levels of management, and union leadership
  • An understanding of grocery retail operations and the functions of the various departments.
  • Ability to plan, develop, and implement initiatives
  • Ability to work well with others in a cooperative environment where teamwork and constant communication is essential
  • Ability to think ahead and anticipate possible barriers
  • Self-motivated to carry project to its end
  • Demonstrated ability to follow through on commitments
  • Ability to handle multiple demands, work under time pressures, and meet deadlines
  • Willingness to be open, to learn, and take on new responsibilities
