Description

The Occupational Therapist evaluates and assesses the patient’s current functional level which has been impaired by illness or injury and implements a treatment program. The primary job of the OT is to improve and restore function and independence in ADL’s. From the evaluation, a specific program is designed and implemented to assist the patient in achieving the highest functional level possible. This is completed within the guidelines of the referring physician.  

  • Assist the physician in evaluating the level of function, disability, injury, or disease process of individual patients by applying diagnostic and prognostic muscle, nerve, joint and functional ability tests appropriate to the age of the patient.
  • Interpret, plan, establish, and exercise proper treatment program in accordance with the physician’s referral, periodically reviewing the patient’s program and response and making recommendations to the physician relative to the need of continuing or discontinuing the occupational therapy.
  • Evaluate, treat, and provide discharge planning with team members for patients, specific to diagnosis and coordinate with other team members.
  • Provide education to patients and family regarding therapy plan, HEP, safety, diagnosis and illness.
  • Assess safety risks and teach compensatory techniques to allow the patient to obtain the highest functional level during ADL’s using energy conservation techniques as needed.
  • Design, fabricate, and fit splints and orthotics to assist patients with ADLs and instruction in their use.
  • Supervise COTAs and assist with patient care planning according to state regulations.
  • Maintain a level of professionalism at all times and report unethical situations to the Occupational Therapy Board or appropriate personnel.
  • Provide documentation of specific treatment/evaluations according to established standards.
  • Observe safety precautions in all aspects of job responsibilities. Maintain a clean and hazard-free environment.
  • Participate in mandatory case conferences
  • Participate in performance improvement activities.
 

Position Requirements
  • Required, licensed Occupational Therapist in the state of practice.
  • Proficient in medical terminology, English, and spelling.
  • Required, possess knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid guidelines essential to Home Health Coverage
  • Required, Demonstrate the ability to assess the interpretation and formulation of patient care plans to meet the needs appropriate to the age of the patients serviced by the Agency
  • Required, ability to perform good dexterity for patient training (sewing, peg tests, woodwork)
  • Required, good organizational and time management skills
  • Required, good verbal and written skills
  • Required, demonstrate proficiency in clinical documentation
  • Required, valid drivers license, and reliable transportation
  • Required, computer, internet access and email capabilities from home or other off-site location

Education

  • Required, Bachelor or Science degree from an accredited school of Occupational Therapy.

Training and Experience

  • One year experience as an occupational therapist, preferably one year experience in the field of Home Health Occupational Therapy.

Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in patient homes, the employee’s vehicle, and in an office environment.
  • Work requires continual mobility
  • Frequently sits, stands, stoops, twists, turns, reaches, and grasps.  Able to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Continually communicates in person and over telephone systems with patients, staff, and other health care professionals; this requires good hearing and speaking skills.
  • Close-up vision is frequently required.
  • Frequently exposed to the hazards of city driving and is often exposed to temperature extremes.
  • Sometimes exposed to potentially unsafe and unsanitary conditions in patient homes.
  • Frequently exposed to biohazards in performing patient care activities.
  • Frequently pushes and pulls a typical weight of one hundred (100) pounds; maximum push/pull weight is two hundred fifty (250) pounds.
  • Frequently lifts and carries a typical weight of ten (10) pounds; maximum lift/carry weight is fifty (50) pounds.
