Deputy Operations Manager - Capital Bike Share 


About Capital Bikeshare:

Bicycle sharing is a sustainable, healthy, and community-based transport option that enhances urban livability and mobility. Capital Bikeshare currently operates with over 300 stations and 2600 bikes in Washington, DC, the City of Alexandria, VA, Arlington County, VA and Montgomery County, MD with system expansion planned in all jurisdictions in 2014.

Through contracts with the Washington DC Department of Transportation (DDOT), the City of Alexandria, VA , Arlington County VA, & Montgomery County, MD, Alta Bicycle Share is responsible for all “on the ground” aspects of Capital Bikeshare, including but not limited to: station and bike building and deployment, station and bike repair and maintenance, and bicycle redistribution.

Overview of Position:

This is a full-time technical and manual position, involving moderately complex duties such as performing weekly maintenance checks and maintaining oversight and management of all fleet vehicles.  Additional duties include Bikeshare station location/site planning and assistance with station installation.  Duties also include facilities upkeep/maintenance and compliance with established safety protocols.

Key Aspects of Position:

  • Maintain and schedule dealer service and perform minor repairs on a fleet of 12+ vehicles, ranging from gas/electric hybrid SUV to a medium-duty diesel crane truck.
  • Work with regional government transportation officials for planning and installation of Bikeshare stations region-wide.
  • Work with Operations Manager to establish Maintenance Of Traffic [MOT] plans and obtain/post parking restriction signs for station deployments.
  • Maintain Bikeshare operations warehouse/facility and work with landlord/outside vendors for repairs as needed.
  • Respond to incidents or emergencies during non-standard business hours, as Capital Bikeshare is a 24/7 operation.
  • Attend safety meetings and work on resolutions to improve workplace safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Work in partnership with Lead Station Tech, Service Manager and Field Bike Tech Supervisor to ensure timely and productive workflow.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year work experience in automotive, power-sport or equipment/machinery maintenance.
  • Valid Driver's License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Experience driving light and medium duty trucks or motorized machinery.
  • Experience with hand, air and power tools.
  • Mechanical and technical aptitude.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, warehouse/shop environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, cycle up to 10 miles per day in urban areas, stoop, bend, and stand for long periods of time.
  • Adaptability to a changing work environment, ability to manage competing demands and deal with frequent changes, delays or unexpected events.
  •  Interpersonal skills – ability to maintain confidentiality, remain open to others' ideas, demonstrate willingness to try new things.
  • Dependability – ability to follow instructions, respond to management direction, communicate frequently, solicit feedback to improve performance.
  • Willingness and ability to work off hours, weekends and/or on-call.
  • This position may require hours which exceed 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Previous bicycle, mechanical and/or logistics experience is a plus.
  • Experience managing and prioritizing multiple conflicting demands of staff, contractors/vendors and clients in a fast paced environment.
  • Team management skills – ability to head up station deployment team, handling all aspects of traffic management and construction site staging.
  • Ability to obtain construction crane and forklift certification.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  •  Intimate knowledge of the Washington DC metro area.
