Bicycle sharing is a sustainable, healthy, and community-based transport option that enhances urban livability and mobility. Under contract with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, Alta Bicycle Share is excited to announce the beginning of its operation of Bay Area Bike Share to include 70 stations and 700 bikes.

Alta Bicycle Share is seeking an experienced Marketing Manager to be responsible for all marketing activities for the Bay Area Bike Share system. The Marketing Manager be part of a ground-breaking team that focuses on developing and expanding the concept of transit for Bay Area locals and visitors.  The unique challenge will be to explore unconventional ways to build strong relationships within multiple Bay Area communities, including cycling and political, to grow public awareness and acceptance of bike sharing. 


  • Lead the marketing launch of the Bay Area Bike Share system to culminate in a major high-profile event. 
  • Launch activities include:
    • Develop marketing and PR plan and budget in coordination with City/Air District client(s).
    • Work with City/Air District client(s) to establish system branding.
    • Coordinate review process of all system mechanicals, including kiosk stickers, stickers on bikes, marketing materials for member packet and events, and website design and content.
    • Manage media, PR, digital, promotional and social media strategy.
    • Organize a large launch event that will garner national and global media attention.
  • Manage all aspects of ongoing marketing for Bay Area Bike Share system after launch, including:
  • Maintain strong relationships among multiple system stakeholders, including members, system sponsor(s), partner agency(s), and clients.
  • Manage and build marketing plan to grow membership, including media, PR, digital, social media, events, promotions and corporate sales.
  • Manage/hire/train event staff and/or interns as needed.
  • Budget and track marketing expenses.
  • Ongoing strategic thinking and ideation, in coordination with City/Air District client(s).
  • Plan, execute and analyze success of promotions, communications, marketing events, partnerships, and sales programs to grow membership and increase visibility of the bike share system.
  • Work with stakeholders to ensure all aspects of marketing include strong community engagement and safety messaging.


Position Requirements


  • Interest and excitement for bike share
  • Undergraduate degree in marketing, business, communications or related field.
  • Communication experience in marketing, community relations, public relations, non-profit management, fundraising, political campaigns or related field.  
  • Experience in membership based organization desired.
  • Exceptional original writing skills, including the ability to synthesize and improve existing written material, keen editorial judgment, and the ability to write for different audiences and delivery channels (email, websites, social media, etc.) to effectively communicate Alta’s mission, impact, and value proposition to a range of stakeholders.  
  • Self-starter and problem solver: Creative mind, analytic skills, strategic thinker, yet can get “hands dirty” in all aspects of marketing bike share.  
  • High comfort level with ambiguity and entrepreneurship a must.
  • Strong management skills with the ability to manage up and laterally.
  • High level of interpersonal maturity, poise, and judgment.
  • Calmly adapts to changes in the work environment, managing competing demands and able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events.  
  • High proficiency in Excel, Word Google Applications and ability to learn new software.
  • Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to the vision, mission and values of sustainable transportation.  
  • Positive attitude and sense of humor a must.
  • Job may require hours that exceed 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week.
  • May require travel.
