Application Architect

Boston MA or St Louis MO

Reporting to the Manager, Architecture, explore this exciting opportunity at Aclara where the successful candidate will be responsible for a high-profile complex, distributed, 24x7, commercial system software product hosted on the .NET platform, while being a part of a small team of others that ensure the technology implemented will serve the business needs and vision, and design and implement architectural enhancements.  This role will also provide technical oversight and expertise for assigned subsystems and mentor developers.

 

Essential functions & responsibilities of the Application Architect include:

  • Primary technical expert in the design and development of a single, or multiple significant subsystems within a large application.
  • Responsible for furthering the architectural vision of the product and how that vision serves the business and is realized in construction.
  • Resolve high-level functional issues
  • Lead Performance Optimization efforts and address performance/scale/high-availability issues including resolving deadlocks and race conditions applying thread dumps, profilers, etc.
  • Review artifacts from all phases – Uses Cases, estimates, high level designs, low level designs, code, test cases – to make sure they meet requirements.
  • Identify complex issues in a timely manner and provides mitigation recommendations to the Project Manager.
  • Work with Senior Developers overseeing subsystem(s) to ensure continuity and compatibility.

 

Additional Responsibilities include:

  • Development of frameworks and other key areas.
  • Present application solution architecture to clients as and when necessary.
  • Help to assess the security of existing applications and ensure that they meet internal and external compliance mandates.
  • Lead the team members and assist in structuring the team’s task for efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Assist project control and process instrumentation including automation of metrics generation used for objective analysis.
  • Communicate as needed with Project Manager, Senior Developers, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), Quality Assurance and Product Manager to ensure architectural vision for the product
  • Ensure development standards are followed including automated checks (via tools such as ReSharper, Visual Studio Static Code Analysis, etc.)
  • Assist Capacity Planning.
  • Assist Source Control, Build, and Deployment Management as needed
  • Identify Non-Functional Requirements (Performance, Security, Testability, Extensibility, Scalability, Maintainability, Deployability, Accessibility, etc.)
 
Position Requirements

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field is required. Candidates must have a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in design and development using Systems Development Life Cycle and Project Management Methodologies, with at least 2 years as an Application Architect, and development experience with Database - Oracle/ODP.NET and SQL Server.  Experience on 2 full project life cycles, commercial Software development experience, and working experience as part of distributed team is required.  Also, candidates are required to have experience with developing performant/scalable/high-availability systems; specifically performance/reliability issues – concurrency, deadlocks, race conditions, database contention, transactions, error handling/recovery and self-correction, applying profiling, memory analysis and thread dumps is highly desirable.  To be successful in the position, candidates must have excellent written skills with experience writing specification or performance documentation, exposure to a broad range of development tools and methodologies, excellent time management skills, including multi-tasking and prioritization, and excellent analytical skills.

 

Preferred qualifications include mentoring and performance feedback, understanding of the Source Control, Build, and Deployment Management preferably Team Foundation Server, experience with a variety of architecture/design patterns and idioms, especially .NET platforms, highly proficient developing for the Microsoft .NET platform, WCF based Web Service development experience for at least two years, experience in uncovering requirements, conceptualizing solutions, and developing a framework for implementation of systems on at least one other project, automation experience including metrics generation, build verification tests.  Additional preferences include:  Experience with Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), Advanced algorithms and data structures knowledge , Distributed systems experience, Mobile Application or Mobile Device development experience, Cloud Computing development experience, Reporting Services and Data Mining development experience, SharePoint design/development experience, Real-time or telecommunications software experience, Good experience in understanding of UML, and MVC / JQuery development experience for at least two years.
