Project Job Title: Instructor – Foreign Language, Regional Expertise, and Cultural Training

Language to be taught:  Arabic

Number of Students to be taught: 8 students (maximum instructor to student ratio is 1:8)

Current Average Student Proficiency Level: ILR Level 1

Training Dates: 08 July – 20 December 2013

Schedule: Monday – Friday 0800-1700, with 2 hours class prep and a 1 hour lunch break; Not to exceed 40 hour work week.

Total number of hours: 880 hrs.

Type of Training: Sustainment and Enhancement Training (SET)

Training Objectives: To provide Basic and Intermediate Language Training focused on participatory listening and speaking.  The testing modality in regards to this training event is the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). Training will, at a minimum, sustain students at ILR level 1/1. Classes will strive to increase at least one score by a 0.5 point on their OPI.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To incorporate listening and speaking exercises as well as conversational practice using real-world situations.  Instruction should focus on speaking and listening skills to improve their communication capabilities with host nation personnel.
  • To provide students with rapport building terminology and exercises.
  • To provide students with a vocabulary of military terminology and practical application of command terms.
  • To provide the students an overview of regional cultural awareness, including important dates and personalities within the region.
  • To produce and maintain an environment that is conducive to classroom instruction and ensure the students receive the best possible instruction, looking for ways to improve.
  • To operate and communicate successfully with teaching partner, who may be from a different organization, to ensure training goals and objective are met.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Minimum of one (1) years combined experience in language education and methodology at the secondary level or higher (200 classroom hours) and a Bachelor degree in education, language, or a closely related field preferred
  • Proficiency in the target language. Interagency Language Round Table (ILR) level 3 or higher in the speaking, reading, and listening modalities.
  • Proficiency in English. Completion formal study of the English Language with sufficient proficiency of at least ILR level 2
  • Fully knowledgeable of the target culture and current usage of the language.
  • Familiar with the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) Proficiency Levels and how they relate to proficiency-based instruction; with the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and Defense Language Proficiency Tests (DLPT);
  • Experience developing and delivering language courses for both platform and e-learning delivery from refresher through advanced levels; focusing on reading, listening, speaking skills, and non-standard language usage.
  • Experience preparing and presenting language platform instruction within a learning center environment.
  • Experience developing and delivering language courses for both platform and e-learning delivery from refresher through advanced levels; focusing on reading, listening, speaking skills, and non-standard language usage.

Computer Skills:

  • Proficient in PC-based computers, Microsoft Office Suite, Windows Explorer, installing and enabling foreign fonts, and common media players (e.g. Windows Media Player, Real Player).
  • Familiar with common PC driven projectors, and SMART Boards as they relate to modern instructional delivery.
  • Proficient with client specfic software.
  • Knowledgeable in Distributed Learning and E-learning, Web-based language learning and testing programs.
