Description

Public Health Foundation Enterprises invites applications for the part-time position of Family Support Specialist.  Under general supervision of the Program Director and Coordinator, the Family Support Specialist (FSS) performs a variety of parent to parent support duties relating to the implementation of the Federal Part C, of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) grant programs in California.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Family Support Specialist provides emotional and technical support (Information, Resource & Referrals) to families of children with special needs between the ages of birth to three years old; over the telephone and in person.  Will assist and provide support for families in preparation for their IFSP (Individualized Family Service Plan) and IEP (Individualized Educational Plan) meetings.  Will also accompany families to early intervention related meetings, including IFSP and IEP when invited by the family.  Position to include but not limited to:

  • Coordinating of training activities for the community
  • Conduct workshops for E-Z Access Notebook trainings
  • Coordinate and may facilitate the Center’s Parent Support Group Activities
  • Represent Family Resource Center at community fairs, conferences, and other events
 
Position Requirements

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Must have good communication skills, ability to work independently, and work collaboratively with other families and professionals.  Must possess good written and oral skills in English.  Demonstrate an understanding of the State Early Program, Regional Center System, Social Services, Health Services and Special Education Services. 

Will be required to travel and work in the Whittier and/or East Los Angeles Community, but will be based at the central office in Alhambra.  May be required to work evenings and/or weekends.

Requires physical strength and ability to lift, pull and lower items up to 25 lbs., bend in all directions, squeeze with arms and hands.

This position will also be responsible for the direct support of families in the Prevention Resource & Referral Program (PRRS).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual in English / Spanish
  • Knowledge of child development as evidence by post-secondary classes in Child Development
  • Computer knowledge and experience with Microsoft Word Suite of Programs
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Dependable, strong organizational skills and self-motivated
  • Parents of a child with a disability are encouraged to apply.

Education/Experience

Minimum of two years experience working with or accessing services from the above mentioned organizations.  One year experience in providing support to families of children with developmental disabilities.

Certificates/Licenses

Must be able to secure timely transportation for off-site travel

This position is supported by special funding.  Continuance is dependent upon available funding.
