Description

Through the collaborative efforts of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention (CDIP), Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Programs (MCAH) and various other county and community partners, the Reducing Early Childhood Obesity program is a community-based project geared towards public education, skills-building and environmental change.  This campaign focuses on the promotion of physical activity and healthy eating among the nearly one million LA County children ages 0-5, their families and the communities where these children reside.

PHFE/DHP is seeking an Assistant Communications Manager for the Reducing Childhood Obesity Project.  The Assistant Communications Manager will be responsible for supporting the Communication Manager in the implementation of the Project’s community settings initiative’s communications plan involving written, spoken, and electronic messaging for obesity prevention efforts of the CDIP and DPH, including development of presentations to increase DPH’s obesity prevention efforts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Work closely with internal County departments to respond to requests for information from the media regarding the Project.
  • Collaborate with First 5 LA, Los Angeles County, and subcontracted agencies to develop, implement, and maintain a culturally-appropriate media campaign for Los Angeles County.
  • Arrange lectures, presentations, and public appearances to increase awareness and to promote goodwill of the Project.
  • Confer with Program Analysts to identify trends and key group interests and concerns affecting the 0-5 target population.
  • Disseminate key project messages through traditional and social media channels.
  • Assemble and coordinate production of publications/marketing materials for internal and external audiences, including e-newsletters and general announcements.
  • Provide technical assistance on media and communications efforts to Project staff.
  • Assist in preparing reports for First 5 LA and other partners.
  • Prepare and communicate updates and project findings to key stakeholders.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of all marketing efforts.
 
Position Requirements

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent writing, editing, proofing and overall communication skills.
  • Knowledge of media production, communication and dissemination techniques and methods.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to relationship-building, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to act with judgment, confidence and personal initiative and to work in fast-paced and highly visible work environment.
  • Experience working in public health or government agency preferred.
  • Computer literate and skilled in use of use of MS Windows-based programs, including Microsoft (MS) Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Adobe Design Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) experience is desirable.

Education/Experience

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a discipline related to the core business function of DPH.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the analysis of mental health or public health program.
  • A Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a discipline related to the core business function of DPH may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Certificates/Licenses

Possess a valid California driver’s license and/or ability to secure timely transportation for off-site travel to a variety of community sites throughout the region.

Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency is highly desirable.
