Description

Through the collaborative efforts of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention (CDIP), Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Programs (MCAH) and various other county and community partners, the Reducing Early Childhood Obesity program is a community-based project geared towards public education, skills-building and environmental change.  This campaign focuses on the promotion of physical activity and healthy eating among the nearly one million LA County children ages 0-5, their families and the communities where these children reside.

PHFE/DHP is seeking a Wellness Educator for the Reducing Childhood Obesity Project.  The Wellness Educator will be responsible for developing the wellness component under the Project’s postpartum women and children initiative.  This position will work with staff to analyze and make recommendations on protocols for stress management and motivation education among postpartum women; develop the stress management and motivation section of a postpartum weight management toolkit, and coordinate activities with the other components of the project.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Review, interpret, and synthesize the literature on stress management and motivation and model programs for stress management and motivation.
  • Develop culturally and linguistically appropriate client education and assessment materials on stress management and motivation, and the wellness sections of the postpartum weight management toolkit.
  • Revise wellness education materials based on focus group testing and piloting.
  • Develop a stress management protocol that includes techniques for reducing the stress response to social determinants of health that an individual cannot change.
  • Provide support for initial trainings on the postpartum toolkit and recommendations for improving physical activity trainings.
  •  Work with social marketing contractor to develop wellness tweets, messages and applications.
  • Lead a blog on stress management and motivation for postpartum women.
  • Provide stress management and motivation support in the community.
  • Develop a clearinghouse of stress management and motivation materials to include resources, tools, and materials developed for client education and trainings complied throughout the project.
  • Develop best practice recommendations for postpartum weight management that include recommendations on stress management.
 

Position Requirements

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability develop a program for managing stress and identifying personal motivators or barriers to change, utilizing techniques such as training sessions and the development of educational materials.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and synthesize the literature on stress management and motivation for change or action.
  • Knowledge of the combined impact of nutrition, physical activity, and stress on weight management.
  • Ability to initiate and maintain contact with community organizations to identify existing programs and offer services.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of an integral, dynamic team.
  • Ability to work independently, think critically, possess excellent time management skills and multitask.
  • Comfortable speaking before groups and working with the public.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel or Access, PowerPoint, and Publisher), use of the Internet and Internet communication portals such as Box and Yahoo! groups, and the use of social media including blogging, Facebook, and Twitter.

Education/Experience

  • A Master’s degree from a program of study accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health with a specialization in Public Health Education, Community Health Education, or equivalent.
  • A minimum of two (2) years experience in one or more fields: health and wellness promotion, counseling, crisis management, stress management, psychology, or mental health.

Certificates/Licenses

Possess a valid California driver’s license and/or ability to secure timely transportation for off-site travel to a variety of community sites throughout the region.
