Description

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Section Chief, the Research Assistant position will provide support on the Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity Health Information Systems Capacity Project for Electronic Laboratory Reporting (ELR).  The Research Assistant will perform quality assurance assessments and comparisons on electronic laboratory data on reportable communicable diseases received in the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) electronic surveillance system, the California Reportable Disease Information Exchange (CalREDIE), against hardcopy documents to ensure that the laboratory data has been accurately translated to electronic form from the laboratory into CalREDIE.  The position is located in Sacramento, California. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide support on the Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity Health Information Systems Capacity Project for Electronic Laboratory Reporting (ELR).
  • Perform quality assurance assessments and comparisons on electronic laboratory data on reportable communicable diseases received in the CDPH electronic surveillance system, the California Reportable Disease Information Exchange (CalREDIE), against hardcopy documents to ensure that the laboratory data has been accurately translated to electronic form from the laboratory into CalREDIE. 
  • Monitor and review large volumes of incoming electronic data/laboratory reports to ensure accuracy of reporting and compare the data to the reports arriving by traditional means including fax, US Mail, or courier.
  • Assist with the maintenance and updating of data in CalREDIE to ensure data integrity and accuracy.
  • Travel on occasion within California. Assist with any other duties as assigned in support of the Section and/or Branch.

 

 

Position Requirements

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have full understanding and application of medical terminology (laboratory terminology preferred). 
  • Familiarity with informatics is desirable especially with knowledge of standardized clinical laboratory terminology (e.g., SNOMED, LOINC).

Education/Experience

  • A minimum of two years’ experience in a setting using laboratory medical technology regularly.
  • Experience in a clinical or public health setting, and familiarity with medical terms and jargon, desired. 

Other Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Work with other programs and other staff as a team player.
  • Communicate and coordinate with individual submitter laboratories for data questions. 
  • Proven organizational skills. 
  • Computer literate, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong oral and written skills.
