Description

Public Health Foundation Enterprises and the Prevention Project-FIS invite applications for the part-time hourly as needed position (20 hours per week, 1-5pm, M-F) of Outreach Specialist with the YUTHE Program. YUTHE is a service of the STD Prevention and Control Section of the San Francisco Department of Public Health. YUTHE is a peer education program designed to help youth and young adults learn how to protect themselves from HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).  The goal of the program is to increase STD screening among sexually active teenagers in San Francisco and to use preventive health services to ultimately decrease the rates of STDs.

SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the YUTHE Program Coordinator, the Outreach Specialist is responsible for conducting street and venue-based outreach, conducting workshops for community-based programs for at risk youth and providing sexual health information at events and health fairs, and conducting STD screening at community-based events.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop appropriate workshops regarding sexual health for youth 12-24.
  • Be willing to be trained to conduct community-based STD screening and recruit individuals on the street to promote testing events.
  • Possess good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Be willing to work early evenings and some weekends in all weather conditions, wearing YUTHE gear while conducting workshops and street outreach in the field.
  • Administering surveys in the field using electronic devices such as IPods, computers, etc
  • Must be comfortable and willing/able to work in any neighborhood in San Francisco, particularly Bayview, Hunters Point, Potrero Hill, Sunnydale and Visitacion Valley.
  • Be willing to work with diverse ethnic groups and individuals of diverse sexual orientation.
  • Have the willingness to be trained about STDs, work with the public and must be comfortable speaking to groups about sexual health issues.
  • Must be able to walk for several blocks, and for a couple of hours at a time conducting street outreach.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

 
Position Requirements

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrate ability to work independently, set priorities and manage multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Must be able to plan, use good judgment, show initiative, follow instructions and follow-up on assignments and activities.
  • Personal Qualities:  Neat, well organized, outgoing, tactful, detail-oriented, self-starter, excellent communications skills and must be professional. 
  • Computer skills including competency with all Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Good written communication skills in spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Education/Experience

  • High School graduate and some college and/or currently enrolled in college. 
  • One year recent experience as a peer educator in San Francisco with youth and young adults and/or working with the public.
