The Director of Development is responsible for the leadership, planning, management and coordination of all of Hospice of Northwest Ohio fundraising efforts.  The Director will work in close collaboration with the Executive Director and the Board to establish and meet the fundraising goals of the organization.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements an integrated and comprehensive fundraising plan for Hospice of Northwest Ohio as a part of the organization’s overall strategic plan. 
  • Works with the Development Committee, the Board and the Executive Director to develop and implement long and short term fundraising goals and strategies including annual appeals, endowment gifts, planned gifts, special campaign/projects and use of electronic media (website and social media).
  • Plans, develops, and executes strategies and activities to obtain private donations: identifying, cultivating and soliciting individual, corporate and foundation gift prospects.
  • Works with the chair of the Development committee to schedule meetings and assure timely follow-up on all decisions made.
  • Prepares Development committee minutes and appropriate reports for the Executive Director and the Board.  Attends Board meetings as needed.
  • Coordinates and assists, as needed, local organizations and individuals who are sponsoring fund raising events on behalf of Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
  • Ensures all donors are appropriately thanked, recognized and receive regular communication as a part of the donor stewardship plan.
  • Oversees the management of the Raiser’s Edge database and all records, files and gift processing.  Assures compliance with all gift processing standards, procedures and Raiser’s Edge protocols.  Ensures that the Raiser’s Edge software is fully utilized and staff are appropriately trained.
  • Represents Hospice of Northwest Ohio at appropriate professional meetings, groups and community organizations to maintain and/or increase visibility of Hospice in the community.
  • Establishes, monitors and maintains the development budget, assuring the greatest value and return on investment.
  • Provides direct supervision of assigned staff and holds employees accountable to established agency performance standards.  Monitors staff productivity.  Provides regular performance feedback and conducts annual performance evaluations.
  • Conducts monthly staff meetings and ensures the effective and positive communication of agency information and goals.
  • Attends staff meetings and completes all mandatory training.
  • Maintains and enhances professional expertise through appropriate continuing education programs and membership in professional organizations.  Ensures development staff receive training to maintain professional skills and acquire new or upgraded skills needed to complete their job.
  • Participates in the strategic planning process of the agency and actively works on goals and objectives in areas of responsibility.
  • As a member of the executive leadership team, actively participates, supports, and promotes agency-wide initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements



  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Five to ten years of progressively increasing fundraising responsibilities including two years of major and/or planned giving fundraising; capital campaign experience desirable.
  • Experience working with board members, volunteers, donors and staff in fundraising and planning.
  • Demonstrates extensive knowledge of fundraising principles, techniques and ethics.
  • Strong persuasive and public speaking skills; strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possesses strong organizational and prioritization skills; able to manage staff, multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook. Development data software knowledge strongly desired; Raiser’s Edge preferred.
  • Ability to work well within an interdisciplinary team setting as well as independently.
  • Commitment to the mission, vision, goals and objectives of Hospice.  Must be willing to expand knowledge and understanding of the field of Hospice.
