The Insurance and Billing Specialist is responsible for working with the Insurance Coordinator to complete the insurance verification process from referral to billing. This person will work closely with Admissions, HIM, Team Leaders, and the Billing Specialists to facilitate the gathering of accurate patient insurance data.  This position is also responsible for all aspects of the accounts receivable billing process for Medicaid insurance and for Room & Board billing. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for understanding all aspects of the insurance process, including, but not limited to:  gathering and documenting patient insurance information;  following up on patients with insurance authorization requirements; working closely with co-workers to ensure all paperwork is completed; perform quality assurance review for data entry for insurance. 
  • Responsible for all aspects of the accounts receivable billing process for Medicaid insurance and Room & Board billing including processing any necessary filings for new admissions.  Ensures all information is entered correctly into the patient management system.  Processes and posts monthly billing, and completes follow-up billing for subscriber liability.
  • Regularly follows up on past due accounts receivable.  Reviews and actively attempts to collect on a monthly basis.  Furnishes everything required by insurance companies.  Submits any uncollectible charges to the Director of Operations.
  • Responsible for providing consistent back up support for the Insurance Coordinator by performing the following functions:  gathering and documenting patient insurance information; coordinate insurance re-certifications and approval for care; perform quality assurance review for data entry for insurance.
  • Meets standards set by Joint Commission and other external organizations, as well as standards set internally by administration and others that relate to this position.
  • Responsible to learn and utilize agency technology made available by the agency to increase efficiency, communication and performance of duties.
  • Participates in the agency’s Quality Improvement program.
  • Attends staff meetings and completes all mandatory training. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 


Position Requirements



  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associates Degree with business courses preferred.  Previous experience in healthcare insurance verification and billing preferred.
  • Demonstrates strong computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel and Outlook.  Must have excellent data entry skills.
  • Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possesses strong organizational skills and the ability to schedule work in order to meet deadlines.
  • Understands and is committed to the hospice philosophy.
