What We Do

The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) is building a new UX Design team to create human-centered solutions for SEI staff and its customers, including the Department of Defense and other government agencies.

We collaborate with IT, business leaders, and technical staff to deliver meaningful, well-rounded user experiences around products that deliver value to the user as well as the organization. Working in all stages of the design process, we:

  • Obtain data about users’ experience.
  • Analyze and synthesize design research.
  • Validate and evaluate ideas, concepts, and solutions.
  • Identify actionable recommendations for improvement.
  • Define innovative workflows, interactions, and business processes.
  • Create usable digital user interfaces.

As a UX Designer, you will collaborate with coworkers and various teams across the organization to plan and design public and internal websites, applications, and tools. Using design research methods, you will provide understanding of people, context of use, and usability, and be responsible for developing well-thought-out and visually compelling deliverables to communicate information structures, concepts, and processes. As an expert in UX and human-centered design principles, you will help define and build a culture of UX at the SEI.

Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in design, UX, product development, communication, or related discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • One (1) year of experience in a position that requires a combination of design, content, and technology.
  • Portfolio that exhibits thoughtful process, strong design deliverables, and excellent writing skills.
  • You will be subject to a background check and might need to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Solid knowledge of HCD principles, information architecture, communication design, design research, content strategy, UI design, writing, and visual design.
  • Simplifying complex data sets to make them intuitive and accessible.
  • Crafting user interfaces that are rooted in user and business needs.
  • Crafting design artifacts and presentations that clearly convey a message or concept to a target audience.
  • Strong communication, writing, planning, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Being an advocate for HCD and the end user, always seeking ways to improve and innovate.
  • Able to balance great design with deadlines while working on multiple projects with shifting priorities.
  • Ability to actively and thoughtfully participate in conversations and thrive in an interdisciplinary work environment that requires independent self-direction, team collaboration, and open communication.
  • Ability to quickly learn new methods, techniques, and approaches.
  • Proficiency in Adobe CC, wireframing tools, or equivalent software.

Desired Experience:

  • Expertise in one of the following disciplines: user interface design, interaction design, information architecture, communication design.
  • Proven ability to research problems, simplify complexity, and develop and communicate new ideas.
  • Ability to lead strategic conversations that facilitate understanding, empathy, and collaboration across disciplines.
  • Working knowledge of design research tools (e.g., OptimalWorkshop or Usertesting.com).
  • Understanding of agile software development practices and lean UX.

Job Function Breakdown:

  • 30% Create and execute exploratory, generative, and evaluative design research plans. Analyze and interpret findings to define human insights, recommend design direction, and improve solutions.
  • 35% Develop documents, wireframes, models, workflows, and other design artifacts to communicate findings, ideas, and solutions.
  • 30% Present design artifacts in clear and compelling ways. Collaborate with others to ensure implementation of design solutions.
  • 5% Execute operational work as necessary.
