Summary of Duties
The Underwriter is responsible for the evaluation, selection, acceptance, rejection, pricing and servicing of commercial and agricultural insurance policies within accepted company procedures and guidelines. Maintains effective agency relationships and manages agency profitability within assigned territories.

Reporting Relationship

Reports to the Vice President of Underwriting

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Reviews renewal policies for eligibility.

2. Reviews new business to ensure that all policy documentation is in place. Provides missing documentation as needed.

3. Determines acceptability of renewals utilizing loss control inspections, motor vehicle records, Dunn & Bradstreet reports, loss experience reports and underwriting filings.

4. Reviews and revises pricing and coverage to ensure premiums charged are commensurate with the exposure.

5. Responds to agency inquiries in a timely manner.

6. Assists the Regional Underwriting Vice Presidents in solving agency disputes or problems. In addition, works closely with the RUVP in assigned territory on agency development and renewal retention.

7. Reviews daily correspondence, reports, endorsements, loss control reports and publications pertaining to responsibility.

8. Examines loss notices, desirability of risk notices from claims and recommends appropriate action.

9. Maintains records of changes in agencies and informs management of the changes.

10. Visits agencies as required.

11. Assists Rating Technicians on rating decisions.

12. Maintains a specific class of business within specified territory and assigned agents following Company guidelines and procedures.

13. Places facultative reinsurance for risks exceeding the reinsurance treaty capacity with the Company.

14. Reviews the underwriting decisions made by Underwriting Assistants on BOP policies to ensure long-term profitability.

15. Coordinates with the Processing Manager the processing of non-renewal and conditional renewal notices within time frame as required of the Department of Insurance.

16. Provides technical direction to Underwriting Assistants and Rating Technicians as required.

17. Other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements Position Requirements Skills/Education/Experience Required:

1. Must have a thorough knowledge of property/casualty underwriting procedures and policies.

2. Must have working knowledge and familiarity with a personal computer in a Windows software environment with keyboard and typing skills at 45 words per minute.

3. Must have extensive knowledge and understanding of ISO/CLM computer programs.

4. Must have excellent communication skills (oral and written). Must also have a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees within the Company as well as agency personnel.

5. Must have strong analytical ability and organizational skills. In addition, must have a demonstrated ability to lead, plan and work well with others.

6. Education equivalent to graduation from college or related work experience in a similar environment.

7. Must have completed and/or is participating in technical insurance course programs.

8. Must have experience in and ability to handle commercial risks which generate a premium level of $250,000.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Principal Challenges

The Underwriter is responsible for maintaining a book of business that generates a premium level of at least $250,000 within accepted company underwriting guidelines and procedures. This requires extensive communication via telephone, face-to-face contact and written correspondence with a variety of individuals throughout the workday that can include Company personnel, agencies or producers, policyholders, and insureds. Must maintain a professional demeanor at all times.

Authority to Act/Level of Decision-Making

The Underwriter is required to follow established underwriting guidelines and procedures, however, it may require the use of his or her discretion and independent judgment in solving problems in day-to-day matters. The Underwriter makes decisions in certain matters however, changes in procedures or exceptions are to be reviewed with the Assistant Vice President of Underwriting.

External and Internal Contacts

External: Extensive contact with agents/producers, policyholders, and insureds.

Internal: Extensive contact with coworkers (Processing Staff, RUVPs, Underwriters) and other employees within all levels of the Company.
