Electrical Engineer Summer Intern

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support the plant and company safety program. Conduct investigations and barrier analysis on safety related incidents. Lead plant by personal example in safely completing all work assignments.
  • Provide technical support to plant operations and maintenance groups on a twenty-four hour per day and seven day per week basis.  Effectively provide technical assistance with maintenance and operating issues at power generation facilities.
  • Perform analysis of plant equipment or systems using vibration data, lubrication condition data, thermal imaging, and metallurgical knowledge.
  • Conduct daily work with respect and integrity toward coworkers, NRG employees, contract employees, outside contractors and any person contacted while conducting the duties performed for NRG.
  • Monitor and report on plant performance, reliability, and efficiency.  Knowledge of the PI system is beneficial.
  • A working knowledge of electrical power equipment maintenance, protection, testing and troubleshooting is required.  This includes knowledge in IEEE guide lines and 480 VAC and 6.9K VAC switchgear.
  • Complete capital and expense projects. This may include conceptual design, present in­-house review of design, detailed engineering, equipment procurement, construction management, commission new equipment, staff training, & project closeout. Project work will include management of contracts & third-party engineering, engineering for system retrofits, specification development and review, engineering and vendor drawing reviews, and plant design/component reviews.
  • Complete economic analysis and feasibility studies on existing and proposed plant equipment.  Complete budget estimates to support O&M and projects.  Generate bid specifications to support projects and maintenance and perform an engineering evaluation on the bids.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with applicable UL, ASME, National Board, Federal, & Local Codes.
  • Develop checklists, procedures and training programs for plant personnel for new and existing equipment.
  • Complete Root Cause Analysis on equipment failures, loss of unit capacity, and other operating incidents.

 

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • May be required to fill in on a temporary basis for other positions at the plant.
  • May be required to work at another plant on a temporary basis.
  • Plant engineers are expected to demonstrate competency in multiple areas of coal fired power plant knowledge.  The main areas of competency are:
  1. Utility boiler, ASME section 1
  2. High Energy Piping
  3. Air preheater, lungstrom and rothmule
  4. General Electric type steam turbine
  5. Large steam turbine valve
  6. Electro Hydraulic turbine controls
  7. Mark VI and EX2100 turbine and voltage regulator controls
  8. Allen Bradley and PLC controls
  9. PI and Foxboro DCS controls
  10. Ball mill and coal pulverizer
  11. Crushers, feeders and burners
  12. Electrical knowledge of MCC’s, wiring, arc flash and transformers.
  13. Electrostatic precipitators
  14. Pneumatic ash movement systems
  15. Large tube condensers
  16. Plate and frame and conventional tube heat exchangers.
  17. Pumps, multi-stage, centrifugal, turbine
  18. Pipe and valves for drum boiler systems
  19. Fans, axial flow and squirrel cage
  20. Conveyor belts
  21. Root Cause Analysis preparation (TapRoot software used)
  22. System Change analysis
  23. Rotating equipment vibration analysis
  24. Lube oil and grease analysis
  25. Thermal imaging analysis
  26. Welding and metallurgy
 
Position Requirements

 Junion or Senior Majoring  in Applicable Electrical Engineering Field or related degree from an accredited College or University.
