The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) Immigration Project is seeking part-time and full-time interns to support various aspects of our project. All internships are paid, and externship credit may be available through students’ schools. The internship generally would entail a commitment of 10 to 15 weeks and can take place during the academic year or during summer break.

The Immigration Project provides LGBTQ+ immigrants with direct legal representation in their immigration cases, with a primary focus on asylum seekers fleeing persecution based on their gender identity, sexual orientation, or HIV status. The program also advocates for legal reform and policy change on issues affecting asylum seekers in the United States.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Operations and Administrative –

  • Help maintain and update online client files;
  • Scan notices, mail, and documents, and place in appropriate client file;
  • Organize and sort physical files;
  • Assist with organizing back log data on Cerenade (management database) and the creation of cases on the Cerenade and NCLR helpline data base software.

Client Services

  • Assist staff members in conducting screenings and intake interviews;
  • Respond to requests for assistance from potential asylum seekers locally, as well as individuals in immigration centers nationwide;
  • Assist staff with written correspondence for potential clients, such as resources, and placement with other key organizations.
  • Work with the immigration team to find and/or create referral or resource sheets and networks.

Hours and Compensation

The Immigration Project Intern position is an hourly, temporary, part-time, non-exempt position. The wage for this position is $18.07/hr.

The Immigration Project Intern will accrue sick leave during their work, but no other leave or benefits. 

 
Position Requirements

Desired Experience and Interests:

  • Demonstrated interest in human rights, asylum, and immigration issues (specific experience in asylum and immigration issues not required - we will provide training on these issues as needed);
  • Experience communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Experience conducting online research;
  • Fluency in additional languages preferred but not required, especially Spanish or Portuguese
