At George Howell Coffee, we believe every cup tells a story. Our coffees are sourced from the highest quality farmers, roasted to highlight their inherent terroir, and brewed to precision. We operate as a coffee roaster and have 5 cafes in the Greater Boston area.

Founded in 2004, after selling his 24 original cafes 'The Coffee Connection' to Starbucks, George Howell has dedicated his life to specialty coffee. He is a 50-year veteran of the industry, and often referred to as the 'Godfather' of specialty coffee and the third wave movement.

Assistant Café Manager - Godfrey

 

We are an artisan, small batch coffee roaster located just outside of Boston, MA. We sell our roasted to order coffee both online to consumers worldwide and to cafes, restaurants and major grocery retailers in the US and Canada. We are a small company looking to grow our business across all channels—wholesale, retail cafés and online.

Responsibilities

At our café/restaurant, the Assistant Café Manager is at the center of the guests’ hospitality experience and our team’s performance. Our Assistant Café Manager creates a warm, welcoming environment for the guests and staff. The Assistant Café Manager is responsible for controlling financial costs and working with the team to deliver on expectations set by senior management (e.g., General Manager, COO, CEO, CFO). Responsibilities in summary include:

Managing and directing the daily operations of the cafe, including selection, development, and performance management of all employees, including management of front- and back-of-house.

Constantly assessing opportunities to increase sales through exciting new coffee drinks, food offerings, and retail promotions. Includes outreach to local businesses and organizations to expand the reach to new potential customers.

Managing the day-to-day operational and financial activities to optimize profits and ensure that guests are satisfied with their beverage and dining experience.

Overseeing and coordinating the planning, organizing, training, and leadership necessary to achieve stated objectives in sales, costs, employee retention, guest service and satisfaction, beverage and food quality, cleanliness, and sanitation.

Understands and completely supports all policies, procedures, standards, specifications, guidelines, and training programs.

Specific Responsibilities

Resolve day-to-day issues such as opening & closing tasks.

Resolve customers’ questions and grievances in a professional manner.

Smooth out problems within the workplace.

Address employee and customer concerns.

Liaise between managers, customers, and employees. Bridge the gap between upper management and staff.

Provide direction and supervision to staff.

Ensure the cleanliness of the café (daily/weekly tasks).

Keep the maintenance log up to date and accurate.

Keep a detailed record of attendance, and follow up on tardiness.

Enforce the dress code and other store policies listed in the employee handbook.

Fill in for the General Manager (GM) in times of absence or vacation. May be asked to assist with other cafés as needed.

Maintain inventory levels and track inventory.

Place orders with vendors and headquarters, including coffee orders, Imperial orders, and Sid Wainer orders.

Train and mentor new staff members.

Ensure weekly classes for the public are organized on time.

Coordinate communication between the front and back of the house staff.

To be successful in this role, you should be familiar with restaurant operations and understand what makes great customer service.

Be available to work within hours of operation, including weekends and holidays if needed.

 
Position Requirements

Knowledge and Skills

  • Working knowledge in the following dimensions of café functions: food planning and preparation, purchasing, sanitation, security, company policies and procedures, personnel management, recordkeeping, and preparation of reports.
  • Must be ServSafe Certified, certified in Choke Saving, and completed allergen awareness training.
  • Experience in café point-of-sale (POS) systems (e.g., Toast or similar) and online reservation systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills and exceptional consciousness of non-verbal language.
  • High level of active listening skills and strong guest service skills, which include the ability to resolve guest issues/complaints with tact and diplomacy.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Strong interest in specialty coffee industry and artisan food products and good, continuously cultivated ability to taste foods and beverages for quality control purposes.
  • Strong multi-tasking, organizational, and time management skills to ensure a quick response to guest, staff, and corporate office needs.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to detect changes in circumstances or events and ensure guests’ satisfaction, also required to work effectively in pressure and/or busy situations.
  • Required to adapt quickly to change to ensure the smooth and effective operation of the business.
  • Punctual for work and meeting commitments.
  • Professional and courteous demeanor.
  • Professional attire.
  • Positive team and motivational skills.
  • Aptitude for accurate mathematical calculations as it relates to inventory and related supplies.
  • Exceptional personal hygiene and positive representation of the organization to employees, guests, and vendors.
  • Fluent in English speaking, writing, and understanding.

Education Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Business, or similar; 2 plus years of experience. Equivalent education and experience may be substituted for Bachelor’s Degree.

Good Things to Know:

  • Our Café is open seven (7) days a week, hours and work days will fluctuate
  • Expertise with POS systems is a requirement
  • This position reports to our General Manager at the Godfrey Café
  • This position is open to internal candidates from date of posting until the position is filled

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand, move, bend and stretch up to eight (8) hours per day
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently
