Position Summary
The Housekeeper & Janitorial Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment for shelter guests, staff, and visitors at the Providence Foundation of San Francisco. This role supports the daily operations of a residential shelter environment through housekeeping, janitorial, laundry, and light maintenance responsibilities.
This position requires a higher level of operational awareness and hands-on facility support than a traditional housekeeping role. Employees in this role are expected to identify maintenance concerns, safely use cleaning and maintenance equipment, support room turnover operations, assist with basic commercial and residential facility upkeep, and maintain shelter environments in compliance with health and safety standards.
The position works closely with shelter leadership, case management staff, and maintenance personnel to ensure guest rooms, common areas, restrooms, kitchens, and facility spaces remain operational, sanitary, and guest-ready at all times.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
General Housekeeping and Janitorial Duties
Clean, sanitize, and maintain guest rooms, restrooms, offices, hallways, kitchens, stairwells, laundry rooms, common areas, and exterior entry areas.
Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, disinfect, and polish surfaces using appropriate cleaning products and equipment.
Clean high-touch surfaces regularly, including handrails, doorknobs, counters, elevator buttons, and shared equipment.
Empty trash, recycling, and waste containers and ensure proper disposal procedures are followed.
Replenish toiletries, hygiene products, linens, towels, paper products, and cleaning supplies.
Prepare rooms for new guest occupancy, including bed preparation, sanitation, and restocking of supplies.
Follow established infection control, sanitation, and workplace safety procedures.
Safely use cleaning chemicals, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with OSHA standards and manufacturer instructions.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when working in occupied residential environments.
Commercial and Residential Maintenance Support
In addition to housekeeping responsibilities, this role requires the ability to support basic commercial and residential maintenance operations within a shelter environment.
Responsibilities may include:
Identifying and reporting facility, safety, plumbing, electrical, or structural concerns.
Performing minor maintenance support tasks such as:
Replacing light bulbs
Tightening fixtures
Minor furniture assembly or repair
Changing batteries in smoke detectors
Basic unclogging of drains
Assisting with room setup and turnover
Assisting with preventative maintenance activities and facility inspections.
Supporting maintenance staff during room repairs, furniture movement, deep cleaning projects, and emergency cleanups.
Monitoring for unsafe conditions, biohazards, water leaks, pest concerns, or property damage and reporting issues immediately.
Maintaining organization of janitorial closets, storage areas, maintenance tools, and supply inventory.
This role requires employees to exercise sound judgment, work independently, and understand the operational needs of both residential and commercial-style shelter facilities.
Laundry and Linen Services
Collect, wash, dry, fold, organize, and distribute linens, towels, and bedding.
Operate commercial laundry equipment safely and efficiently.
Maintain inventory of linens and notify supervisors of shortages or damaged items.
Ensure clean linen availability for guest turnover and emergency needs.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.
Minimum of one (1) year of experience in janitorial, housekeeping, custodial, facilities, hotel, shelter, residential, or maintenance-related work.
Experience working in commercial, residential, shelter, hospitality, healthcare, or supportive housing environments preferred.
Basic understanding of sanitation practices, workplace safety standards, and cleaning procedures.
Ability to safely operate cleaning equipment and tools.
Ability to identify basic maintenance or safety concerns and communicate them appropriately.
Strong reliability, professionalism, and attendance record.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment serving vulnerable populations.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in shelters, supportive housing, hotels, property management, or residential facilities.
Basic knowledge of commercial and residential maintenance operations.
Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred but not required.
CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
