NCU is currently seeking a dynamic individual to become part of our Financial Aid team as a VA Benefits Specialist (Certification).

The VA Benefits Specialist is responsible for advising and assisting veterans and their dependent’s with educational benefit application processing and eligibility criteria. This position is also responsible for acting as a liaison between veterans and the Department of Veteran Administration with regard to educational benefits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Advises and disseminates information to veterans relating to educational benefits.
  • Assists veterans and their dependants in applying for educational benefits through the Department of Veterans Administration.
  • Acts as a liaison between veterans and the Department of Veterans Administration with regard to educational benefits.
  • Receives calls, faxes, and e-mails inquiring about veteran’s benefits.
  • Certifies Veteran Administration forms.
  • Reports enrollment status changes, academic progress, and attendance to the Department of Veterans Administration.
  • Updates and maintains files, records, and documents; and creates reports.
  • Monitors veteran’s educational progress.
  • Ensures University compliance with Veteran Administration standards.
  • Complies with State and Federal audit requests and prepares all necessary documents.
  • Reviews and researches federal regulations, manuals, and guidelines to stay current on issues affecting veteran’s education.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Knowledge of Veterans Affairs certification practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of file and record management.
  • Skill in VA ONCE certifications.
  • Skill in operating equipment, such as personal computer, fax, copier and phone system.
  • Ability to communicate effectively via phone and e-mail.
  • Ability to prioritize workflow.
  • Ability to prepare letters, reports and business correspondence.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • VA certifications experience needed.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Detail oriented.
  • All skills, abilities and education will be considered for minimum qualifications.
