Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:  The Minister for Environmental Justice is responsible for developing and implementing strategies that will engage UCC Congregations in a comprehensive environmental justice movement.  The program work is to advance the decades-long effort of the UCC to eliminate environmental racism and to build on the Church’s commitment to link faith and the environment. The engagement of congregations will be measured by their efforts as legislative advocates and their own spiritual practices of environmentally responsible behavior.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide national staff leadership and support to a comprehensive environmental justice movement that engages partners in all settings of the United Church of Christ.

  • Provide national staff expertise to ensure that the UCC advocacy agenda has persuasive influence on federal and state environmental justice public policies.

  • Maximize church-wide involvement by serving as staff support to an advisory committee and/or task force of UCC members with expertise in various issues related to environmental justice (environmental racism, eco-justice, climate change, etc.).

  • Collaborate with key ecumenical and interfaith partners to develop and implement educational materials and advocacy objectives that bring to bear the full power and influence of people of faith engaged in environmental justice both nationally and globally.

  • Incorporate cutting edge scientific research that provides current data that is essential to future engagement of the church’s education and social policy advocacy goals.

  • Ensure that educational materials and best practices linking faith and the environment are available for use by all settings of the UCC.

  • Coordinate with national and conference staff colleagues to develop UCC leaders focused on environmental issues, with special support to youth and young adults.

  • Ensure that the comprehensive environmental justice movement connects with training programs offered through the Environmental Justice Centers for Education and Social Transformation (Pilgrim Firs in Washington State and Silver Lake in Connecticut).

  • Utilize multiple communications vehicles to strengthen and broaden the message to all constituencies of the UCC and faith partners.

  • Offer expertise as needed to green building standards at the national setting of the UCC.

  • Provide program expertise for content narrative for funding proposals to support environmental justice programs.

  • Contribute to the effectiveness of the JWM staff team by fostering a spirit of cooperation and accomplishing assigned tasks.

  • Responsible for overseeing the annual travel and program budget assigned to environmental justice work ensuring good stewardship of financial resources.

 

 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

 

  • A Master’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience, or a combination of academic study and experience.

  • Knowledge and experience in scientific, economic, and sociological research that describes the various environmental issues that contribute to current injustices.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to justice, particularly environmental justice, from a biblical/theological perspective

  • Ability to articulate a theological understanding of mission in its broad range of concerns and to witness from a solid faith perspective.

  • Understanding of the polity, organization and structure of the United Church of Christ

  • Demonstrated competency in working with diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to pluralism in the workplace and community.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in written, verbal and through the internet with new electronic technologies

  • Demonstrated ability to work with grassroots community groups and a knowledge of issues of environmental justice.

  • Demonstrated written and oral English language skills, including ability to conceptualize and develop printed resources

  • Preaching and/or public speaking skills

  • Competency in leadership development and training.

  • Ability to travel as necessary
