Summary:   The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe is dedicated to fully exercising its sovereignty to reduce illegal activity and reduce crime rates on the reservation through the Lower Elwha Tribal Court.  The Lower Elwha Court Clerk/Administrative Assistant would assist in the operation of the Tribal Court.

Overview:  This staff member would be responsible for clerking for all Tribal Court hearings, managing the filing system, maintaining a master court calendar, regulating access to court files and filing all necessary court documents.  This staff member would be responsible for providing administrative assistance at the Elwha Justice Center

Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe seeks a Tribal Court Clerk/Administrative Assistant to work 40 hours per week as a critical member of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribal Court Team.   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS—The Tribal Court Clerk/Administrative Assistant will clerk all Lower Elwha Tribal Court hearings and provide administrative assistance including:

  • Managing pleadings and other documents filed in Tribal Court, including: overseeing filing system, regulating access to documents on file and responding to requests for copies of documents;

  • Must be able to maintain complete confidentiality;

  • Must be able to provide administrative services and support to the Elwha Justice Center.

  • Must be able to successfully complete training for the Court Management System and be able to complete data entry into the CMS.

  • Recording all Tribal Court proceedings;

  • Managing the various Tribal Court dockets, including maintaining a master calendar of upcoming hearings, trials and other proceedings;

  • File all necessary legal documents; prepare documents to be served on clients including mailing and faxing documents.

  • Accepting payments for tribal court fines, and traffic fines

  • Collaborate with the Tribal Court Director, Prosecutor and the Chief Judge in drafting necessary forms and documents for use by the Tribal Court;

  • Participate and attend all court related trainings and meetings.

  • Assist in providing information and regular reports to the Tribal Court Director for the granting agency and the Tribal Community Council;

  • Ensure that all appropriate staff is informed of conditions of release, and or bench warrants on all clients of Lower Elwha Tribal Court

  • Keeping statistics on how many people are processed through the Tribal Court System, and how many people are currently active in the Tribal Court.

  • Collaborate with Tribal Court Staff, Elwha Probation, and Elwha Police to improve the flow of information between all Departments;

  • Maintain all Tribal Court official records;

  • Must be willing to be trained in administering urine analysis tests on clients of the Elwha Justice System.

  • Other duties as assigned.

 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, experience, skills and abilities required by position:

 

  • Knowledge of all aspects of tribal law, federal law and any state law relevant to Tribal Court proceedings is preferred;
  • Knowledge of LEKT tribal community is strongly preferred;
  • Twelve months experience providing services or customer service is required, social services, ICW or Tribal Court experience is preferred.  Requirement may be met by equivalent education.
  • A High School Diploma/General Education Diploma is required as a minimum;
  • Respect for the culture and traditions of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe is required;
  • Organization skills, advanced computer skills (word, excel, outlook, computer management system) and be required to have phone etiquette skills.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
  •  Must be able to resolve problems, handle conflicts and make effective decisions under pressure, and maintain professionalism at all times with clients and staff.
  • Must be able type a minimum of 45 WPM.
  • Must be willing to attend all training activities, including cross-training.

PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS: 

  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, climb stairs;

  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds;

  • Ability to utilize the manual dexterity to operate standard office machines such as, computers, fax machines, copiers, calculator, and telephones.

    OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Drug Free workplace

  • Must be able to follow directions and guidelines

  • Must be able to pass a drug test.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable.

As with all positions of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe this position is Indian Preference in hiring, in Accordance with P.L. 93-638

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week. 

SALARY LEVEL: 11A $14.91/hour to 11B $15.67/hour Grant Funded One Year, Benefits
