Description

OVERVIEW:   Provides support to families enrolled in the Lower Elwha Head Start and Early Head Start programs through parenting education, family goal setting, cultural activities, resource and referral.  The ideal candidate will work well within the Management Team to provide comprehensive services to all families.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:

Responsible for providing support to families, leadership and supervision for the Lower Elwha Head Start/EHS Program by:

  • Collaborating with management team to recruit families and facilitate enrollment of children into the Early Head Start/Head Start (ESH/HS) programs.
  • Collaborates with management team to participate in Community activities to promote recruitment and provide information regarding EHS/HS programs, i.e. Kids’ Fest, PW Parenting Summit, etc.
  • Collaborates with management team to provide support to families enrolled in the Lower Elwha EHS/HS programs through crisis intervention, parenting education, goal setting, defining family strengths, cultural activities, and resource and referral.
  • Conduct family conferences/home visits as required by HS Performance Standards to:
    1. Identify family strengths, assess needs and build partnerships

    2. Assist family in developing goals and a plan to reach those goals to strengthen family unit

    3. Provide community resource information and make referrals for services as needed

    4. Contribute in coordination of services for all families

  • Coordinates with Peninsula College Parent Educator to develop and facilitate monthly family gatherings.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with management team and staff.
  • Collaborates with management team to support parents/guardians in Program Governance.
  • Collaborates with management team to keep current with community resources and services available for families, helping families to access them as appropriate.  Maintains a current Community Resource Guide and makes copies available to families and staff.
  • Ability to communicate with families regarding program activities.  Directs family concerns to the appropriate staff.
  • Provides Orientation to families in collaboration with Management Team. 
  • Encourages family involvement in EHS/HS activities.
  • Recruit and trains volunteers, ensuring that all appropriate HR policies are completed.
  • Maintain program documentation in a timely manner as required by EHS/HS regulations.
  • Reviews and update all F/CP Policies and Procedures and Service Plans annually or as needed.
  • Complete written forms/reports accurately and enter into computer data base within 24 hours.
  • Maintain the CONFIDENTIALITY policy AT ALL TIMES.
  • Ability to work with a diverse cliental.
  • Conducts self as a professional representative of the Lower Elwha HS/EHS at all times, adhering to the NAEYC code of professional ethics adopted by the Lower Elwha HS/EHS.
  • Collaborates with management team to participation in the program planning and relationship building among LEKT programs.
  • Collaborates/facilitates with management team for PIR, grants, Self-Assessment, Policy Council and Community Assessment.
  • Actively participates in staffing as required, provide pertinent information on families as needed.
  • Provide transportation to families to meet program needs.
  • Collaborates with management team and staff to generate monthly center newsletter(s) and informational flyers.
  • Attend all staff meetings, in-service trainings, and required trainings (CPR, CA/N, Food Handlers’, etc.) each school year.
  • Actively participate in recommended trainings/classes for ongoing professional development and be able to share new information with staff.
 
Position Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY POSITION:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact with families in a professional and respectful manner in their home environment.
  • Knowledge of theories and practice of Early Childhood Education, Human Services and/or Human Development is desired.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks, multi-task as needed, and flexibility to meet program needs.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Problem solving and cooperative skills are required.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of resources for design and delivery of training.
  • Ability to gain a working knowledge of local community needs and resources.
  • Treat children and families with dignity and respect.
  • Collaborate with management team to handle any staff and/or family issues that develop in a professional manner.
  • Follow chain of command for all conflict situations.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates Degree in Human Services or related field desired. A minimum of two years comparable work experience may be substituted for education if enrolled in an accredited program leading to a degree.
  • Two years experience in family social services setting, including knowledge and experience relating to community resources for referrals to families in need of services.
  • Must have knowledge of early childhood education and intervention, with at least two years Early Head Start or Head Start work experience.
  • Valid Washington State Drivers license, must be insurable
  • First Aid/Infant and Child CPR required.  Must keep current.
  • Must within 30 days of employment acquire food handler’s card.  Must maintain certification.
  • A physical exam with results in letter form that states person is free of communicable diseases (Negative TB test) by employment date
  • Strong communication skills:  both verbal and written is necessary
  • No prior convictions of child-related offenses or any felonies.  Background check to be conducted prior to employment date
  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Head Start Drug Free Workplace policies.   Pre-Employment drug testing to be administer prior to employment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Moderate lifting, occasionally 15-40 pounds.
  • Must be able to work at a desk up to 8 hours per day
  • A reasonable amount of driving is required. 

OTHER UNIQUE DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to respond appropriately (both mentally and physically) to an emergency or a crisis situation.
  • Availability to assume other duties within HS/EHS as needed.
  • Perform other duties as needed to meet program requirements.
  • Reports to work at scheduled times and maintain a good attendance record; performs duties in a timely and professional manner; participates in all program activities with a positive attitude and behavior.

SALARY LEVEL: 10A 14.33/hour

WORK SCHEDULE: 34 hours per week 49 weeks per year

As with all positions of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe this position is Indian Preference in hiring, in Accordance with P.L. 93-638
