OVERVIEW: The Early Childhood Klallam Language Teacher Apprentice will Work with Elementary Klallam Language Teacher to develop and implement Klallam Language curriculum at the Lower Elwha Head Start/Early Head Start & Lower Elwha Child Care, as well as assist during Community Language Classes, Summer Program and other Cultural Events, while working towards tribal language teacher certification.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

  • Work with Elementary Klallam Language Teacher, Lower ElwhaHead Start/Early Head Start & Child Care Teachers & Staff to develop and implement Klallam Language curriculum at the LEHS/EHS (Tues-Fri 9-1), Lower Elwha Child Care (M-Fri 130-5).

  • Work with other language program staff to provide cultural & language outreach and instruction during community events such as school district potlatch, canoe journeys & summer education programs.

  • Meet with tribal elder weekly to consult on Klallam language, history & traditional knowledge.Apprentice will keep a journal of topics discussed. Days vary due to elder availability. Recording may be done upon permission of elder. If no time is spent with elder, then weekly time will be spent to transcribe digitized recordings of elder interviews.

  • Attend weekly staff meeting & study sessions (Mondays 10am) to increase knowledge of the Klallam Grammar by completing grammar lessons &/or transcribing stories.

  • Attend Community Language Classes every 3rd Tues of Month 5:30-7

  • Create and/or organize language & culture curriculum.

  • Digitize photographs, illustrations, historical documents and audio recordings.

  • Attend weekly LEHS/EHS scheduled meetings (Mondays at 8:30) in order to plan and coordinate lessons with teachers

  • Work towards becoming a Tribally Certified Klallam Language Teacher (keep portfolio of lessons developed, create presentation, attend child abuse prevention course)

  • Attend all assigned trainings

  • Be flexible to schedule adjustments.

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

 
Position Requirements

MINI              MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 18 years or older

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • 2 years’ experience in the Klallam Language.

  • First Aid and Infant Child CPR Card and Food Handler’s Permit within one month of employment.

  • Valid WA State driver’s license and a good driving record

  • Pass Criminal History Background check (no felonies, or child related offenses).

  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Drug Free Workplace policies

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required by the Position

  • Extensive knowledge of the Klallam Language, culture and traditions

  • Ability to supervise 0-14 year old children while ensuring a safe environment by being able to monitor and respond to events going on at all times

  • Ability to establish & maintain effective working relationships with Tribal elders, members, and staff.

  • Good technological and organizational skills.

  • Basic Microsoft Program knowledge (word, office, outlook, excel, power point)

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

  • Ability to work independently, make decisions and maintain program wide goals & priorities.

  • Ability to work within the budget provided by program director.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work involves sitting, standing, walking, lifting, talking, hearing, reading & writing.

  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally.

As with all positions of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe this position is Indian Preference in hiring, in Accordance with P.L. 93-638

SALARY LEVEL:  7A -10.26 hourly  to 7F-12.98 hourly
