JOB SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the P.A.T. Mgr., the P.A.T. Nurse is responsible for professional nursing care and related assistance to perioperative patients.  The P.A.T. Nurse is responsible for implementing the Pre-Operative records, and implementing the physician orders, obtaining signatures and consents prior to the surgical procedure.  Screen and assess patient fitness for anesthesia and surgery.  The P.A.T. Nurse will provide continuity and quality of nursing care in coordination with departmental specific policies and procedures.

PATIENT AGE GROUP SERVED

This position may from time to time require that patients outside of the normal age group/groups be cared for.  In this event the person should consult available resources to provide the appropriate care.

  • Infant (29 days – 12 months)           
  • Childhood (1-12 years)
  • Adolescent (12-17 years)
  • Geriatric (65 & older)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs perioperative assessment of patients days prior to surgery.  The assessment will include but not limited to doing a basic physical exam, obtaining vital signs, LAB, X-Ray, and EKG monitoring.
  • Plans all work steps to ensure success:  OR schedule, supplies and support required from other individuals and departments in setting up work plan and completing duties.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, workshops, and in-service meetings etc. 
  • Maintains awareness of current hospital and departmental operational standards which impact position responsibilities.  Performs effectively in stressful situations to fulfill position responsibilities.
  • Maintains patient safety through surveillance of all practices in the P.A.T. Dept.  Exercises judgment in the delegation of activities to ensure patient care is provided by staff with identified competencies in meeting individual patient needs.
  • Participates in scheduling to provide continuous availability of patient services.  Responds promptly to changes in workload, adjusting assignments as necessary to achieve optimal productivity and efficiency.
  • Communicates effectively with O.R. Director to facilitate coordination of patient care among all disciplines providing patient care services.  Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintain good employee relations with collaborative integration of the healthcare team.  Acts as patient advocate in obtaining care with questioning of orders or other practices as indicated using appropriate channels of communication. 
  • Participates in Performance Improvement and is able to articulate departmental PI/QC activities, one of the top four hospital-wide PI activities and able to state the methodology for PI sued y the organization.
  • Demonstrates the components of the hospital’s core values of compassion, integrity and innovation.
  • Demonstrates customer service standards by smiling, making eye contact, greeting each patient and visitor, seeing out patient and visitor contact, displaying appropriate body language at all times, taking time to go above and beyond for one patient/visitor each day, honoring diversity, and thanking each customer.
  • Follows all safety rules while on the job.  Reports all accidents and corrects minor safety hazards.  Communicates with peers and management regarding any hazards identified in the workplace.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

RN Licensure in the State of Texas, with a BSN preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Position requires a minimum of one (1) year of nursing experience in an ER, acute care setting and/or an Operating Room setting preferred. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Current license to practice as an RN in the State of Texas
  • Current BLS
  • Current ACLS
