The Assistant Controller position provides multifaceted financial and reporting support for the national setting of the United Church of Christ including but not limited to supervision for the Ministry Accountant-Small Companies, financial reporting and analysis for General Synod, bank account reconciliations, budgeting for the certain corporations of the United Church of Christ, financial analysis and developing and presenting reports.



  • Supervise the Ministry Accountant-Small Companies, including secondary authorization on transactions for the companies in excess of the Ministry Accountant’s signing authority and review/signature of all reconciliations completed by the Ministry Accountant.

  • Budget preparation for the Office of the General Minister & President (OGMP), Justice & Witness Ministries (JWM), Franklinton Center at Bricks (FCAB), 700 Prospect Corporation and Common Services Corporation.

  • Review all reports prepared by the Ministry Accountant-Small Companies prior to distribution.

  • Provide secondary authorization on all wire transfers and ACH transactions.

  • Complete monthly reconciliations for all national office and Kansas-Oklahoma Conference bank accounts (except for the Church Building & Loan Fund), including preparation of journal entries as required to ensure accuracy of accounts and allocations of interest expense and bank fees.

  • Provide support and reporting for the combined annual audit for the national offices in cooperation with the CFO and other FS staff.

  • Maintain accurate records related to OGMP and JWM endowed and non-endowed funds including but not limited to transfer of new endowment funds for investment purposes.

  • Reconcile all related investment and fund balances including preparation of journal entries or transfers to and from United Church Funds as required to ensure the accuracy of funds with direct investments.

  • Prepare monthly entries for postage and copy clicks based upon information provided by the distribution center staff as well and allocate Common Service expenses through the accounting system.

  • Provide board reports as requested by the CFO.

  • Provide support to the 700 Prospect Corporation and Common Services Corporation boards of directors.

  • Prepare monthly fund reports for the Kansas-Oklahoma Conference.

  • Provide support to the Kansas-Oklahoma Conference Finance & Asset Committee and the Conference Council.

  • Assume other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform successfully in this position.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration is required; preference will be given to candidates with an MBA or CPA credentials, and experience in church or not-for-profit financial management. Relevant 5 to 7 years of financial management experience with in-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices and principles, and extensive knowledge and experience with financial computer applications and systems.
  • Experience in preparation, evaluation and interpretation of budgets, financial statements and reports; ability to recommend and implement sound fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated communication, managerial, supervisory and interpersonal skills; ability to establish and maintain effective and collegial working relationships with staff, directors, customers and vendors.
  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to diversity in the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission.

  • Ability to maintain and properly handle confidential or sensitive information.

  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the Church, with a knowledge or, or a willingness to learn about the history and polity of the United Church of Christ and of the history, purpose and programs of Local Church Ministries and its related organizations.
  • Travel within the United States is required, including overnight and weekends.
