About the Organization Salem Community College is a public, two-year comprehensive associate degree granting institution located in southern New Jersey. Established by the Board of Chosen Freeholders in 1972, SCC is authorized to grant associate degrees (A.A., A.S., A.F.A. and A.A.S.) and certificates in over 40 liberal arts, business, practical nursing and technology programs of study. SCC is the only higher educational institution located in Salem County. SCC offers many of its noncredit career programs at its Salem Center which also houses the County's One-Stop Career Center. In addition, the College has three off-site instructional locations dedicated to specific programs.

Salem Community College is fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Provides executive leadership for all academic services offered by the College.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:


Institutional Responsibilities

  • Serves on President’s Executive Staff.
  • Participates with executive leadership in development and implementation of Strategic Plan.
  • Serves as Accreditation Liaison Officer for the College to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and thereby provides institutional leadership in all matters related to accreditation.
  • Serves as the College’s Chief Academic Officer and thereby represents the College on all academic matters with external agencies and organizations (such as the New Jersey Council of County Colleges).
  • Recognizes academic achievement of students and certifies students for graduation.


Personnel Responsibilities


  • Recommends for hire, mentors, supervises and evaluates full-time personnel in Academic Affairs, including full-time faculty members, Associate and Assistant Deans, Director of Nursing and Allied Health Programs, Director of Academic and Information Services, Administrative Secretary.
  • Oversees divisional professional development programs. 
  • Administers the provisions of the Faculty Collective Agreement.


Budget and Planning Responsibilities


  • Prepares, maintains and approves all divisional budgets and budget expenditures.
  • Develops and implements a division plan for Academic Affairs that is coordinated with the college-wide planning process.
  • Interacts with Institutional Research and Planning to obtain academic data in order to make data-driven decisions.


Academic Program Responsibilities


  • Develops, implements, and updates partnerships and articulated programs and agreements with four-year colleges and universities and other community colleges.
  • Develops and expands K-12 partnerships and oversees agreements with these partners.
  • Oversees assessment of student learning, facilitates the implementation of student learning outcomes measures, and ensures that outcomes assessment data is used for improvement of academic programs and courses.
  • Oversees the delivery of academic services to provide the highest possible quality of educational experience for all persons served by the College in a cost-effective manner.
  • Formulates and updates academic policies as needed.
  • Prepares and submits required state academic reports
  • Maintains a comprehensive academic program review process and outcomes assessment plan for all academic programs.
  • Oversees preparation of the master course schedules and assigns teaching schedules for all instructors.
  • Researches and considers alternative course delivery formats and financially favorable to the institution to meet student needs and appeal to new markets.
  • Ensures appropriate academic technology training and support for all instructors and encourages increased use of academic technology in teaching and learning to stimulate greater student engagement.
  • Evaluates alternative course delivery formats and schedules to ensure the highest level of student success and ensures student performance is consistent regardless of delivery format.
  • Stimulates and oversees the development of new programs and/or courses consistent with strategic planning goals.
  • Maintains regular process of student survey of instruction evaluation, including use of national survey instruments every few years, and ensures that survey results are analyzed and shared with instructors for improvement of instruction.
  • Develops and maintains a system of academic program advisory committees.
  • Ensures that all academic programs maintain their currency and are updated and revised as needed.



Other Responsibilities


  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with faculty and Student Affairs personnel to ensure coordination of academic programs and services.
  • Collaborate with Enrollment Management to promote academic programs and recruit students.
  • Coordinates and ensures the timely delivery of services and reports as needed.
  • Participates in professional activities as appropriate for institutional development as well as for continuing personal professional development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Position Requirements

Knowledge and Skills:


Experience                              Five (5) years community college academic experience with a minimum of three (3) years in administration.  Familiarity and experience with community college academic procedures.  College or community college teaching experience required.  Experience with regional accreditation and the development and implementation of Strategic Planning strongly preferred.  Demonstrated commitment to the community college philosophy.


Education                                Master’s degree from an accredited institution required.  Doctorate or appropriate terminal degree preferred.


Interpersonal Skills                 Ability to work effectively with faculty, administrators, staff and external constituencies.


Technical Skills                       Working knowledge of current and emerging computer hardware and software, including relevant ERP systems and all Microsoft Office products.

Physical Requirements            The work is mostly sedentary; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items, driving an automobile, etc.  No special physical demands are required to perform the work.


Work Environment                 Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
