General Purpose of Role:

  • Under the direction of the Director HSE, Canadian Drilling, the HSE Advisor Shop/Yard will be responsible for ensuring, compliance with both corporate and regulatory agency safety standards, with expectations to continuously improve safety performance through development of proactive loss prevention programs.

Summary of Duties (Duties may include, but are not limited to the following):

  • Assist all site supervisors to ensure work carried out on locations is being performed according to Savanna HSE Policies, Procedures, and Practices;
  • Assist line management in establishing, developing and administering the Environmental Health and Safety system by participating in the support of policies, practices and procedures designed to prevent environmental health and safety incidents and damage;
  • Responsible for monitoring and assisting all activities related to safety for activities at shop and yard;
  • Provide a coaching and training role for Site Supervisors, Contractors, Savanna personnel, as required;
  • Establish contacts with peer groups at the Nisku, Leduc, and Redcliff shops to enhance their knowledge of safety management systems and new developments;
  • Travel to work locations for the purpose of monitoring projects, inspections, training, orientations, promotion of safe work practices, mentoring, and coaching;
  • Be competent and familiar with Company HSE Policy, Procedure and appropriate regulatory governance;
  • Responsible for safety issue resolution with support of the Site Supervisors, contractors and Director HSE Canadian Drilling along with Operations Management;
  • Ensure that emergency response capabilities are in place and periodically tested for deficiencies, any deficiencies will be noted and responsibility assigned to the correct supervisor and or Manager to ensure proper closure in a timely manner;
  • Ensure that inspections are being done on a regular basis and that all deficiencies found are being followed up on promptly to ensure compliance to regulations and company policies;
  • Conduct independent inspections as required or deemed necessary;
  • Advise employees and contractors on matters concerning the environment, health and safety of personnel;
  • Work with line management to ensure that employee and contractor orientations are completed;
  • Promote safety awareness at all levels by communicating and implementing safety coaching and general awareness;
  • Maintain and analyze safety performance statistics (e.g.  LTA, MW, MA, FA, equipment damage, etc.) to provide recommendations to line management with the intent of reducing and or resolving areas of concern;
  • Prepare and distribute monthly, quarterly and annual performance report based on activities and performance statistics;
  • Ensure all events/incidents are investigated to the degree warranted by the severity and risk associated with the events as per the Savanna HSE manual criteria and level ranking;
  • Participate in the investigation of all incidents;
  • Ensure all warranted events are entered into Incident Management System via the Senior HSE Administrator;
  • Attend and actively participate in department and project meetings. Inform field level supervisors, workers or contractors of activities that will impact their business;
  • Assist groups to develop and maintain safe operating practices standards and procedures (this would include any permit to work, JHA’s, Lock out Tag Out, and Confined Space Permitting required);
  • Provide safety input and support at all key steps in project planning for shop and yard activities;
  • Assist and participate with the group in attaining safety targets / objectives and report performance regarding achievement of set targets;
  • Optimize the safety of third party contractors by assisting with the assessment of their safety performance and programs.  Providing clear recommendations (which will be shared with line management);
  • Work with contracting to ensure contractors strive for safety excellence;
  • Monitor, for the purpose of recognizing and rewarding health and safety excellence within the groups;
  • Mentor and coach staff on the positive aspects of a successful HSE program;
  • During the course of inspections, be cognizant of environmental issues at the work site and will document and report these issues to line management for correct follow up;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to travel to numerous work locations;
  • Strong leadership skills;
  • Strong computer skills including the use of Word, Excel and Power Point;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Strong verbal communication and writing skills;
  • Be comfortable working in multidisciplinary teams;
  • Must have a good working knowledge of Drilling Rig Operations. These include components of the rigs.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Degree or diploma in environmental sciences and or loss control prevention (or a related discipline).
  • Have safety certification (any one or more of the following IADC / CAODC / PITS / EUB) or equivalent. Willing to pursue a recognized diploma in the safety profession;
  • 4+ years related operational experience;
  • 5 years HSE related experience with at least 1 year in a supervisory capacity;
  • Having Modern Safety Management, Practical Risk Assessment, an auditing certification, certificate in Incident/Accident Investigation and Prevention, or an environmental awareness and impact course, preferable CAODC or IADC recognized, would be considered an asset
