GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:   Assist the Director and other senior staff and volunteers in carrying out development programs of the national setting of the United Church of Christ; primary responsibility for the solicitation of individual gifts for the UCC. This position will be charged to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward 100-200 prospects for the UCC, partnering with other staff and development officers as appropriate.  This position will require direct face-to-face cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, with an expectation of some travel. As part of the UCC development team, the Associate Director for Major Gifts will be expected to work collegially and provide fundraising leadership to the national setting and its external programs.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate in institution-wide fundraising and strategic development initiatives, supporting and assisting the scheduling of all contact with highest level donors.
  • Facilitate and coordinate major gift fundraising by supporting and monitoring the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities of philanthropy team members.
  • Manage portfolio of major gift prospects with the responsibility for raising private support for the UCC either individually or collaboratively with other appropriate staff. 
  • Work to coordinate the assignments of prospective donors among assigned UCC programs and services.
  • Work independently and with the Office of Philanthropy and Stewardship team to test and devise the best strategies to maximize fundraising streams.

  • Manage and initiate all activity related to prospects consistent with moves management principles.

  • Work closely with Director of Office of Philanthropy to develop operating plans, implement metrics and tracking reports for prospect management.

  • Manage, mentor and model successful fundraising best practices fundraising staff across the UCC organization.

  • Recruit, train and manage donors and volunteer leaders to help identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors.

  • Creatively and persistently seek connections to new prospects to qualify interest and capacity, and to build pipeline
  • Prepare contact reports and ensure donor activity in database system is current.

  • Collaborate with colleagues throughout the UCC, and especially other Office of Philanthropy and Stewardship areas to assure that prospects are identified, researched and engaged in the most effective way possible

  • Oversee, coordinate and provide follow-up to high-level focused engagement events and other special events

  • Collaborate with the staff team and other church leaders as they identify needs and prepare compelling cases for giving.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • A college degree in a related field or equivalent experience, or a combination of academic study and experience.

  • Experience in the philosophy and practice of philanthropy in the non-profit sector and demonstrated ability to work in the area of leadership gifts

  • Demonstrated ability to secure major gifts of $50K+.
  • Demonstrated credibility necessary to influence and tactfully manage relationships with internal and external constituencies.
  • Experience in gaining access to and establishing connections with national business, foundation, and industry leaders; philanthropists; and other high-level individuals.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Capacity to develop and execute complex strategy impacting philanthropic effectiveness.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and relate to a variety of diverse stakeholders.

  • Commitment to and theological understanding of mission, stewardship and philanthropy.

  • Understanding of the polity and structures of the United Church of Christ.   

  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to diversity in the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission.

  • Ability to maintain and properly handle confidential or sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and Raiser’s Edge.

  • Limited travel within the United States.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 7 years' experience as a major giving development officer.
