About the Organization Salem Community College is a public, two-year comprehensive associate degree granting institution located in southern New Jersey. Established by the Board of Chosen Freeholders in 1972, SCC is authorized to grant associate degrees (A.A., A.S., A.F.A. and A.A.S.) and certificates in over 40 liberal arts, business, practical nursing and technology programs of study. SCC is the only higher educational institution located in Salem County. SCC offers many of its noncredit career programs at its Salem Center which also houses the County's One-Stop Career Center. In addition, the College has three off-site instructional locations dedicated to specific programs.

Salem Community College is fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Role:    Performs patrol duties on foot or by vehicle to insure the safety and protection of persons, College property, buildings, and grounds against fire, theft, vandalism; issues citations for College violations; and performs other related work as assigned. Officers maintain good public relations by assisting others as a source of information and direction; respond to requests for assistance and investigate incidents that occur on College property.



Major Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Patrols buildings and grounds to deter and detect theft or vandalism
  • Checks doors and windows for security; opens/locks doors
  • Reports any apparent malfunction of College infrastructure to Campus Operations
  • Reports/ responds to dangerous conditions including safety and fire hazards
  • Provides information to staff; students, and visitors
  • Reports unusual or suspicious situations
  • Writes reports on theft, vandalism and other related incidents
  • Operates two-way radio to communicate with college base station and other officers
  • Performs traffic control duties including issuing of parking citations
  • Provide safety/money escorts for campus community
  • Process identification cards and parking permits to College staff and students
  • Provide vehicle unlocks and motorist assists for campus community
  • Inspects safety concerns on campus such as lighting, medical response and fire systems
  • Assists local law enforcement and other emergency response staff as requested
  • Observes all activities on campus, which might have a security or safety interest
Position Requirements

Knowledge and Skills:


Experience                              Sworn law enforcement (with RPO Permit) preferred, or related field and valid driver's license.


Education                                High School Diploma/GED, Police Training Commission or Basic Officer Training Certificate preferred.


Interpersonal Skills                 Strong and effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Technical                                 Working knowledge of current and emerging computer hardware and software, including relevant Microsoft Office products.


Other Skills                             Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees of organization.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations..


Physical Requirements            While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk, hear, taste, or smell. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


Work Environment                 While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; extreme cold and extreme heat. The noise level is usually moderate. Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes some nights and weekends.
