JOB SUMMARY

The Pre-Op Nurse assesses and prepares patients for surgery safely and in a timely manner, communicating findings with appropriate medical staff, and assuring continuity of care and patient confidentiality. The Post-Op Nurse is responsible for assessing and maintaining adequate ventilation, hemostasis and circulation; assessing level of consciousness, providing pain management, and ensuring the safety of the patient until transfer to another unit or discharge.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

PRE-OP NURSE DUTIES:

  • Admit patient to pre-op in a timely manner.
    • Identify patient by name and check accuracy of ID band.
    • Determine NPO status.
    • Determine surgeon and type of procedure being performed
    • Double check operative and informed consents sent from floor or PAT.
    • Assess patient health status and obtain health and social history.
    • Review and obtain applicable consents.
    • Check chart for completeness: Anesthesia consent, Informed consent, Operative consent, Advanced directives, History & Physical, Labs if applicable, EKG if applicable, CXR if applicable, Preanesthesia evaluation, Face sheet, Labels, Orders if applicable
    • Obtain vital signs: BP, Pulse, Respirations, Temp, SaO2
    • Have patient remove all jewelry, dental appliances, glasses or contact lenses, and hairpins.
    • Instruct patient to change into gown and socks. Patient must remove underwear. 
    • Review and execute any applicable orders from attending physician and anesthesia.
    • Instruct family where to wait and proper use of in house beeper system.
    • Perform blood sugars on Insulin Dependent Diabetics and record results. Follow up if necessary.
    • Start IV’s
    • Review and communicate abnormal clinical results with anesthesia and attending physician when applicable.
  • Maintain cleanliness of area and operational efficiency of equipment.
    • Organize and prepare department for next day’s schedule.
    •  Assist in cleaning and restocking panels as necessary.
    •  Prepare charts for next day surgery patients.
    •  Make and distribute missing H&P list for next day surgery.
    •  Stock drawers and cabinets.
    •  Plug in computers for recharging.
    •  Replace red Sharps box when ¾ full.
    •  Lock cabinets.
  • Assist PAT department as needed.   Pre-assessment of patients coming in for surgery at a future date – either via telephone or in person.
    • Assess patient health status and review pre-anesthetic evaluation with patient.
    • Review orders and complete/order necessary lab or x-rays.
    • Determine need to see and/or consult with anesthesia in advance of  surgery. Follow up as applicable.
    • Provide and review preop instructions with patient and family.
    • Perform EKG’s as necessary.  Follow up as necessary.
  • Assist with Post –Op patients follow up phone calls.
    • Participate in call rotation.
    • Assist with post-surgical telephone calls.

POST-OP NURSE DUTIES:

  • Maintains area in a state of readiness at all times, ensuring that all necessary equipment is available and in good working order, with age specific supplies ready for use as needed.
  • Assess patients on admission to PACU; airway patency, respirations, vital signs, level of consciousness according to Aldrete Score.
  • Assess and record vital signs every 10 minutes. 
  • Use appropriate devices and techniques to assist patient’s respirations and maintain optimum blood oxygen saturation. 
  • Assess surgical site for bleeding, reinforce dressing and notify physician of increased drainage.
  • Position patient as ordered by physician. 
  • Assess and record intake and output of all fluids. 
  • Carries out physician/anesthesia orders.  Assess patient for transfer to patient’s room or discharge when Anesthesia and Discharge Criteria met. 
  • Record pertinent patient information on nurse’s notes. 
  • Demonstrate economic use of equipment and supplies. 
  • Maintain confidentiality of all pertinent patient care information to assure patients rights are protected. 
  • Communicate appropriate information to other members of the healthcare team in a timely manner.
  • Participate in overall Perioperative Department functions including, but not limited to scheduling of procedures, training new staff, maintaining appropriate statistics, assisting with Quality Assurance projects, education to improve self and others, and attending staff meetings and annual educational inservices as required. 
  • Comply with attendance requirements. 
  • Channel suggestions, criticism, and questions to appropriate individuals. 
  • Accept and act on constructive criticisms to improve professional abilities. 
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations, recognizing the need for assistance and obtaining support from anesthesia personnel and/or personnel and/or physician as needed.
  • Recognize legal responsibilities and function within limitations as specified by law. 
  • Is able to accept supervision and benefit from constructive criticism. 
  • Responsible for complete and thorough performance of assigned tasks. 
  • Follows established rule, regulations and policies. 
  • Demonstrates an awareness of safe conditions and safe acts as related to hospital employment.  Exhibits cooperation, self-control and courtesy in relating to co-workers and job related contacts.  Demonstrates respect for authority, discusses problems and follows chain of command.
  • Maintains professional competency through appropriate continuing education.
 
Position Requirements

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Licensed as a RN in the state of Texas without restrictions.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Two years of experience required. Has special training or experience in pre-op and post-op care procedures and or has attended hospital approved orientation.  Understands role/responsibilities in Emergency Action Plans and responds appropriately.  Maintains required hospital certifications.
