Description

Open since 2005, the Arab American National Museum (AANM) is the first and only museum in the world devoted to Arab American history and culture. The AANM helps to preserve the rich culture of Arab Americans through educational workshops and cultural exhibits both in Dearborn, Michigan and through partnerships with other museums across the country.

Job Title:  Educator  

Employment Status: Full-Time

Job Summary: Under limited supervision, uses intermediate skills obtained through experience and training to conduct educational tours for adults and students as well as public and private organizations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct educational tours at the museum.
  • Prepare presentations and educational materials for educators and students including presentations on the history and contributions of Arab Americans.
  • Conduct presentations regarding the Arab American culture both onsite at the Museum as well as other locations (schools, community events, conferences, etc...)
  • Assist with the implementation of youth programs. May be responsible for leading some programs.
  • Research information regarding various exhibits and present to audiences as appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain contact with various clientele requesting Museum tours including schools, teachers, and various civic organizations. Schedule and coordinate visits.
  • Maintain records of visitors including payment and invoicing information.
  • May be responsible for reading and reviewing grant content and ensuring requirements are met.
  • May assist in gathering information for grant reporting participate in writing reports for various grants.
  • May participate in the planning of various events designed to increase the number of visitors to the museum.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Fundamental concepts, principles and practices of Arab American, Ethnic and Middle Eastern history and current events.

Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipments and using required software applications including Patron Edge and Microsoft Office.

Ability to:

  • Partner with other functional areas to accomplish objectives.
  • Develop and deliver public presentations.
  • Interpret and apply policies and identify and recommend changes as appropriate.
  • Organize and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of the organization.

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Degree Required:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Required Disciplines:
    • Education, Middle Eastern Studies/Arabic, or a related field

  • At least one to two years working as an educator. Working with children/students is a plus. Any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training approved by Human Resources.

Working Conditions:

Hours:            Normal business hours.  Some additional hours may be required.

Travel Required: 0-5%
