Description

Open since 2005, the Arab American National Museum (AANM) is the first and only museum in the world devoted to Arab American history and culture. The AANM helps to preserve the rich culture of Arab Americans through educational workshops and cultural exhibits both in Dearborn, Michigan and through partnerships with other museums across the country.

Job Title: Curator, Collections 

Employment Status: Full-Time

Job Summary: Under general supervision, uses specialized knowledge in Museum Studies and skills obtained through experience and/or formal training to maintain the records and physical care of the Arab American National Museum’s (AANM) object and archival collections.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain up to date records of all collections including the permanent collections, archival collections, out-going and in-coming loans, etc…
  • Maintain collections by keeping objects numbered, organized and prepared for long term preservation.
  • Collaborate with other areas of the Curatorial department on exhibit design, content, archival collections and other details.
  • Implement suitable collection policies and standards
  • Manage the museum archives by collecting materials for the institutional archive, receiving collections from donors, processing collections, writing finding aids and making them available in the library catalog and on the online collections.
  • Write grants for archival and curatorial projects.
  • Cultivate new relationships and maintain existing relationships with donors, which include responding to inquiries, developing collections, acknowledging donations, etc…
  • Field all inquiries of donations, appraisals, etc…
  • Administer the online collections and its web presence as well as post to the museum’s social networking sites.
  • Ensure that adequate security and environmental conditions for the collection are maintained.
  • Fulfill all photo/document reproduction requests for researchers, authors, filmmakers, etc…
  • Operates standard office equipment and uses required software applications.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Advanced concepts, principles and practices of Arab American culture and American studies.
  • Fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of collections principles and practices, collections management issues and trends and the care and conservation of collections.
  • Fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of material culture and the use of objects in documenting and interpreting personal narratives.

Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipments and using required software applications, including Microsoft Office and Past Perfect collections database

Ability to:

  • Partner with other functional areas to accomplish objectives.
  • Provide a high level of customer service.
  • Organize and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of the organization as well as with external business partners.

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Degree Required:
  • Master’s Degree
  • Required Disciplines:
    •  Arab American Studies, Museum Studies or a related field)

  • At least 5 years of experience in a museum setting or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training approved by Human Resources.

Hours: Normal business hours.  Some additional hours may be required.
