Position Lead Telecommunications Technician

Position Summary:    The Lead Telecommunications Technician schedules, installs and maintains various types of electronic communications systems and equipment such as VHF and UHF two-way mobile systems, microwave point-to-point systems, and wireless networks. They will be responsible for the installation, configuration, upgrade, maintenance and evaluation of telecommunication systems and equipment at customer sites. The lead technician works closely with customers, engineers and project managers to ensure timely completion of projects and resolve any issues on-site. This person will also perform site evaluations on new and existing sites to determine if all applicable standards have been met.

Position Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Interface on a daily basis with customers, project managers and clients
  • Read and understand blue prints, configuration diagrams and wiring schematics.
  • Installation, commissioning, and testing of telecommunications equipment.
  • Installation and testing of DC, AC and solar power equipment
  • Develop and distribute current project status reports
  • Schedules and coordinates repairs, installations, removal of equipment, preventative maintenance, etc.).
  • Performs R56 site audits.
  • Works with Project leads, customers and vendors to troubleshoot and resolve any issues. 
  • Generates hand drawings and computer generated drawings, creates site documentation (e.g. layout of equipment within a room, electrical distribution at a site, site access maps, special site considerations, and microwave baseband flow drawings).
  • Install, route, dress and terminate various cable types.
  • Establish and maintain strong professional relationships with customers, executive staff, colleagues and subordinates.
  • Provide on-site support for various telecommunication systems.
  • Enhances DTSI’s reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Extensive travel within the continental US.



  • In depth knowledge of EIA/TIA, NEC and BICSI codes and standards.
  • Solid understanding of telecommunications technologies, practices and methods.
  • Strong verbal & written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to travel for extended periods of time without returning home.
  • Experience working with LMR systems.
  • Working knowledge of microwave systems.
  • Ability to perform R56 site compliance inspections at remote RF sites.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Experience working in a leadership role.
  • Positive and professional attitude.
  • Cabling and termination experience.
  • Physically capable of working on ladders, floors and in tight spaces.
  • Must be able to learn new technologies with appropriate training.

Authority/Accountability:  The Lead Telecommunications Technician reports to the Program Manager for Telecommunications.  This person is expected to independently make decisions related to the daily performance of his duties.  This position requires performance with no supervision.
