Primary Function

To administer the Latin America and Caribbean Office of Global Ministries; facilitate relationships with churches, ecumenical and interfaith organizations, communities, and other partners in the region; provide pastoral care to and supervision of missionaries assigned to the region; provide leadership within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ on education and advocacy issues related to the region.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. To understand the needs and priorities of the Latin America and Caribbean’s partners, and explore/develop opportunities for mutual ministries including the assignment of missionaries, grant allocations, interpretation resources, and other programs/projects.
  2. To provide specialized knowledge for the benefit of Global Ministries on the nature and scope of the Latin America and the Caribbean’s work, and the religious, social, economic, political, and cultural life of the region.
  3. To participate in budget development and recommended financial support and staffing for overseas ministry in coordination with overseas partners and other Global Ministries offices as appropriate.
  4. To administer the budget of Latin America and Caribbean office.
  5. To represent the Latin America and Caribbean office in those structures within the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, and the World Council of Churches responsible for making decisions related to programs and projects in the office.
  6. To administer the appointment and supervision of mission personnel in the region.
  7. To coordinate and supervise the work of the Latin America and Caribbean office Administrative Assistant.
  8. To maintain effective contacts with other instrumentalities of Global Ministries on concerns related to the region.
  9. To work with partners, staff and constituencies in order to advance advocacy initiatives in the region.
  10. To engage in financial development activities as needed, especially as they relate to the region. 
  11. To work cooperatively as a staff team member of the Common Global Ministries Board.
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Proven commitment to Christian mission in the broad range of concerns of Global Ministries.
  2. Fluency in Spanish and English. Some knowledge of French and Portuguese is helpful.
  3. Experience of living in Latin America and the Caribbean or an extensive knowledge of the religious, social, and political realities of the region.
  4. A commitment to the ecumenical movement and to working with specific programs and structures; such as the National Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches.
  5. Competence to deal with complex intercultural, international and theological issues as they bear upon the implementation of Christian mission.
  6. Ability to prepare, analyze, oversee, and distribute the annual operating budget and designated gifts related to the office of Latin America and the Caribbean.
  7. Demonstrated written and verbal skills, experience in program planning, implementation, evaluation, and supervision of staff.
  8. Ability to function effectively and creatively on a staff team and to communicate well with a wide range of constituencies and partners in this country, as well as within Latin America and the Caribbean.
  9. Ability to assess needs and problems accurately as a basis for developing effective solutions.
  10. Commitment to and experience within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) or the United Church of Christ, as well as an understanding of either of the churches’ polity and structure.
  11. An advanced degree in international studies (with emphasis in the geographical region), or in a related field is highly desirable.
  12. Theological studies are highly desirable.
  13. Ability to travel within the U.S. and the Latin American and Caribbean region as needed.
