We are seeking an experienced Risk Management and Insurance professional to join our company at our corporate campus in Cleveland, OH to lead the ongoing development and implementation of a robust risk management program for the entire business. You will assume the risk management leadership role for Applied’s operations located in the US and abroad: service centers, distribution centers, and repair and assembly operations. 

As Director of Risk Management and Insurance, you will report to the Vice President-General Counsel & Secretary. The position will open on June 1, 2014.

Key Responsibilities

  • Meet / exceed specified risk management objectives, including budget targets.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain new and existing approaches to programs and procedures to reduce risks, promote business continuity, and protect Applied’s assets.
    • Develop fundamental understanding of our business functions and related risk management and insurance programs and procedures.
    • Working with the business, evaluate the company’s needs, and identify, measure, and analyze loss exposures.
    • Analyze options, recommend actions, develop policies, programs, and procedures to mitigate loss exposure and drive efficiencies and effectiveness.
  • Lead the negotiation, placement, and ongoing management of all lines of the business insurance portfolio, including the primary casualty program, property, management liability coverage, global master control programs, professional errors and omissions, aircraft products liability, and attendant layers of excess liability coverage.
  • Prepare renewal specifications, gather accurate and complete underwriting data, negotiate terms and conditions of coverage, evaluate adequacy and scope of coverage, assess the financial solvency of participating insurance carriers, internal budgeting, endorsement documentation, competitive pricing, recordkeeping, and develop and execute internal cost allocation methodologies.
  • Evaluate self-funded risk retention levels and maintain adequate self-funded loss reserves/accruals.
  • Evaluate, negotiate, and manage relationships with current and potential brokers, third party administrators, and service providers.
  • Develop and maintain business relationships with all departments, functions, locations throughout the organization to meet mutual objectives, mitigate loss, and build stronger business processes. Partner with all levels within the organization.
  • Resolve casualty claims and losses.
    • Consult with and provide leadership/guidance to defense counsel retained to represent the Company’s interests.
    • Participate in mediations, arbitrations and/or settlement negotiations for large casualty exposures.
    • Onsite management of large property losses. Coordinate Company operational and insurance carrier claims adjustment activities to achieve prompt restoration of business functions and a fair assessment of tangible asset loss. Negotiate claim settlements consistent with policy terms and conditions.
  • Participate in due diligence and risk evaluation process for acquisition targets and other business opportunities.
  • Develop and deliver risk exposure and loss control training.
  • Supervise management of routine self-funded casualty claims and risk management administrative tasks including production and management of certificates of insurance, departmental recordkeeping, wage and asset reporting, electronic claims reporting to the TPA, surety bonds, periodic management reports, maintenance of record and insurance policy archives, etc.
  • Manage risk-related information systems.
  • Other projects and duties, as assigned.


Position Requirements
  • 5+ years of proven strategic experience as a risk manager or assistant risk manager for a   complex business entity with multiple locations
  • Knowledge of and experience with general tools and techniques of risk management and the technical aspects of multi-line insurance terms and conditions, and workers compensation compliance
  • Proven knowledge of insurance, contracts, laws, and policies and best practices relating to risk management
  • Casualty claims adjustment and management exp
  • OSHA compliance programs and other safety-related functions exp
  • Project management
  • Skilled with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), report preparation and presentation
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Ability to travel 10-20% of the time
  • Must live in Northeast Ohio. We do not offer relocation assistance. 


  • Industrial distribution or manufacturing experience
  • CPCU, ARM, and/or CRM credentials
  • MBA
  • International risk management and insurance experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • Prior work in a business operations role
