Open since 2005, the Arab American National Museum (AANM) is the first and only museum in the world devoted to Arab American history and culture. The AANM helps to preserve the rich culture of Arab Americans through educational workshops and cultural exhibits both in Dearborn, Michigan and through partnerships with other museums across the country.

Job Title: Curator, Education and Public Programming

Employment Status: Full-Time

Job Summary: Under limited supervision, uses specialized knowledge in Arab American and Middle Eastern studies along with skills obtained through experience, specialized training or certification to educate the public about Arab American history and culture. Responsible for leadership, strategy and direction related to seminars, workshops, tours, public programming, cultural events and other outreach activities that showcase the richness and diversity of Arab civilization and acknowledge contributions Arab American have made to our society.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans, designs and implements interpretive and educational presentations in collaboration with other AANM and ACCESS departments, including workshops, cultural competency trainings, tours, and exhibit driven activities.
  • Develops educational resources for students based upon the Michigan Department of Education K-12 Curriculum and Standards.
  • Conceptualize and implement public programs in collaboration with other AANM and ACCESS departments that promote and further the mission of the AANM as well as expand the museum’s audience base.
  • Assists with marketing and fundraising efforts including grant writing and earned revenue related to education and public programming.
  • Develop, implement and track metrics to measure, interpret and analyze the effectiveness and outcomes of education and public programs and ensure alignment with strategic goals.
  • Direct or conduct independent research related to museum exhibitions and programs.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with the educational community and cultural institutions to promote the activities of the department.
  • Provide continuing education opportunities for teachers and community members.
  • Plans, assigns, monitors and manages the work of others.
  • Reviews performance and evaluates results achieved by subordinates.
  • Coaches and mentors subordinates.
  • Interprets, applies and recommends changes to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Reviews progress of assignments with senior management.
  • Balances conflicting resource and priority demands.
  • Create and operate within department budget. Ensure compliance with financial guidelines.
  • Maintains currency in effective educational techniques for learners at all age levels and ensures continuity of education with direct reports.
  • Operates standard office equipment and uses required software applications.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Advanced concepts, principles and practices of creating and delivering educational content in an informative and entertaining manner for learners of all age levels.
  • Advanced concepts, principles and practices of Arab American culture, art, and American studies.
  • Budget management, including creating and maintaining a budget.
  • Local, national, and international art organizations and cultural institutions.

Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipments and using required software applications, including Microsoft Office.

Ability to:

  • Provide a high level of customer service.
  • Partner with other functional areas to accomplish objectives.
  • Facilitate meetings, ensuring that all viewpoints, ideas and problems are addressed.
  • Attend to detail while maintaining a big picture orientation.

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Degree Required:
  • Bachelor’s Degree

    •  Education

  • At least 3 years of prior experience designing and developing curriculum for learners of various age levels. At least 1 year of supervisory experience required or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training approved by Human Resources. Prior experience in a museum setting a plus.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Licenses/Certifications Required at Date of Hire:
    • Teaching certification from the Michigan Department of Education (preferred but not required).

Working Conditions:

Hours:   Normal business hours.  Some additional hours may be required.

Travel Required: 10 – 15%

Working Environment:      Climate controlled office environment.
