Job Title: Major Gifts Officer

Employment Status: Full-Time

Open since 2005, the Arab American National Museum (AANM) is the first and only museum in the world devoted to Arab American history and culture. The AANM helps to preserve the rich culture of Arab Americans through educational workshops and cultural exhibits both in Dearborn, Michigan and through partnerships with other museums across the country.

The Arab American National Museum is currently seeking candidates for the position of Major Gifts Officer. This job requires passion, vision and an entrepreneurial spirit for an institution growing in national significance.

Job Summary: Under general supervision, uses specialized knowledge in fundraising and development as well as skills obtained through experience and/or formal training to implement the major donor fundraising efforts for the organization or an assigned area of the organization. S/he engages the institution's individual donors in the work and impact of the Museum while expanding the donor base to include new major donors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement a development plan to identify and cultivate new prospects and donors including conducting research, gift history analysis, and efforts to upgrade existing donor commitments.
  • Manage relationships with prospective and existing donors in all aspects of the gift cycle including: identifying, qualifying, and initiating contact with potential leadership and major gift donors; developing appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers; moving potential donors toward solicitation and closure; making solicitations when appropriate; and maintaining stewardship contacts with donors.
  • Work closely with CFO, Executive Staff, Directors and Board Members to identify potential prospects and create a strategy for cultivation.
  • Organize, or assist with organizing, small- and medium-scale events to introduce AANM to new audiences and raise money.
  • Research new prospective donors, analyze their giving history and potential, and write donor briefings.
  • Produce fundraising materials including but not limited to letters, emails, newsletters, proposals, PowerPoint presentations, and reports. This includes drafting original copy and editing documents.
  • Develop cultivation and solicitation strategies for each prospect, and track moves in Raiser’s Edge.
  • Track solicitation amounts, anticipated gifts, pledges, and income, and provide regular revenue and cash flow updates on projections versus actual.
  • Manage portfolio of prospects and donors within business development system.
  • Support CFO in managing the overall fundraising plan, with the ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and change strategies as needed.
  • Assist with managing planned giving program.
  • Represent the AANM within the community.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) regulations is desired.
  • Fundraising best practices, standards, and ethics.

Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipment and using required software applications, including Microsoft Office.
  • Use of Raiser’s Edge software a plus.

Ability to:

  • Solicit and secure five and six-figure gifts from individual donors (proven track record).
  • Partner with other functional areas to accomplish objectives.
  • Facilitate meetings, ensuring that all viewpoints, ideas and problems are addressed.
  • Incite enthusiasm and influence, motivate and persuade others to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Organize, prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Degree Required:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Master’s Degree Preferred
  • Required Disciplines:
    •  (e.g., Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Finance or a related field)

  • At least two years of successful fundraising experience working in a nonprofit organization or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training approved by Human Resources.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Licenses/Certifications Required at Date of Hire:
    • None

Hours: Normal business hours.  Some additional hours may be required.

Travel required: approximately 30 – 40%

Working Environment:          Climate controlled office environment during normal business hours.
