Position Requirements

Ideal candidate possesses excellent writing and project management skills.  Ability to produce a persuasive, concise and well-organized finished product quickly and with attention to detail is imperative.  A minimum of two years of experience in grant/proposal writing, business or non-profit development communications, marketing or related field preferred.  A Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications or a related field is required.


OBJECTIVE:  Support the Development Team in securing funding to support COSI’s mission by serving as the principal writer, editor and/or project manager for funding requests, reports and other development communications as assigned.  The primary audiences for these communication vehicles are external, including current and prospective individual, corporate, foundation and government donors/grantmakers. 



  1. Compile, write and edit proposals, grant applications, letters of inquiry and evaluation reports as assigned to secure funding in support of COSI.  Efficiently manage the process from start to finish in collaboration with other Team Members and with careful attention given to funding deadlines.
  2. Write and edit supporting Development communications as assigned, including: gift acknowledgment templates, solicitation/appeal letters, e-newsletter/brochure copy, presentations, stakeholder letter, CEO correspondence and talking points.
  3. Serve as a member of the Grants Resource Group.  Provide resources and counsel to Team Members seeking strategic grants on behalf of COSI.  Manage the strategic grants log.
  4. Ensure updates are made as needed to COSI’s frequently used proposal templates and public online organization portraits (e.g. PowerPhilanthropy, GuideStar).
  5. Annually compile the institutional dashboard with facts and figures related to COSI’s service to the community.
  6. Manage the development content on the COSI website.  Engage other Team Members in regular review of website content and the development of new content.  Provide leadership for content development for electronic newsletters for development, including the donor and alumni e-news.
  7. Communicate and collaborate with appropriate COSI Team Members—specifically the Marketing Department, Program Directors and Project Managers—to gather information necessary to write and edit Development materials and ensure these materials are current and relevant.  Remain knowledgeable on all of COSI’s experiences and programs as well as organization priorities.
  8. Attend donor stewardship and fundraising events as well as volunteer leadership committee meetings as needed.  This includes some early morning, evening, and weekend assignments.
  9. Support the Development Resource Manager in the management of the institutional database, Raiser's Edge, to ensure all constituent information is effectively and efficiently maintained for the benefit of the institution.
  10. Support general COSI operations through participation in meetings as appropriate.
  11. Serve as an example to other COSI Team Members and Volunteers in matters of appearance, attitude, and performance in a manner best serving COSI paid and Volunteer Team Members and Guests.
  12. In accordance with COSI's Guest Services Strategy, and as opportunities present themselves, provide excellence in Guest Services by assuring Guest safety, using courtesy to drive each Guest interaction, by delivering the COSI show, and by keeping operations efficient.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Development.
