GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

 

The Office of Philanthropy and Stewardship will gather and steward time, talent and treasure to enable excellent and faithful ministry in all settings of the United Church of Christ.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Maintain a portfolio of leadership gift prospects (individual, congregational and Conferences).  Nurture prospective donors; interpret to them the mission and various ministries of the United Church of Christ; and consult with these donors and their advisors regarding support of the UCC through leadership gifts.   Solicit gifts as assigned.

 

  • Educate prospects as to the major outright and legacy gift opportunities available and the ways in which they might make those gifts.

 

  • Work as part of  the Leadership Gifts Team and the Office of Philanthropy and Stewardship  to identify and develop cultivation plans for leadership prospects.  Provide leadership in coordinating efforts in leadership giving across the settings of the Church.

 

  • Provide leadership in the development of cases for support and their expressions.  Collaborate with the staff other church leaders as they identify needs and prepare compelling cases for giving.

 

  • In cooperation with members of the Office of Philanthropy and Stewardship help to develop financial development strategies for the United Church of Christ.

 

  • Respond to inquiries for information and resources as requested by Conferences, congregations and individuals.

 

  • Promote the program’s positive public image by effectively responding in writing and orally on a timely basis to inquiries for information, accepting speaking engagements, and serving as a resource. 

 

  • Contribute to the effectiveness of work teams by fostering a spirit of cooperation and accomplishing assigned tasks.

 

  • Work with the Director and members of the Collegium and senior staff to foster an understanding and commitment to Philanthropy throughout the Church.

 

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
 

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

 

  • A college degree in a related field or equivalent experience, or a combination of academic study and experience.

 

  • Experience in the philosophy and practice of philanthropy in non-profit sector and demonstrated ability to work in the area of leadership gifts

 

  • Demonstrated ability in the development and the securing of gifts.

 

  • Commitment to and theological understanding of mission, stewardship and fundraising; ability to articulate and witness to one’s faith perspective.

 

  • Understanding of the polity and structures of the United Church of Christ and a commitment to its values.

 

  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to diversity in the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission.

 

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently.

 

  • Demonstrated written and oral English language skills, including ability to conceptualize and develop print and electronic resources; public speaking skills and knowledge of a second language is highly desirable.

 

  • Computer literate in word processing and spreadsheets

 

  • Demonstrated administrative skills.

 

  • Competency in leadership planning, development and training.

 

  • Ability to travel extensively within the United States as necessary.

 

  • An entrepreneurial orientation
