Position Requirements

Ideal candidate will possess an inventive spirit; initiative to work without direct supervision; able to work on multiple projects simultaneously; able to read basic blue prints, floor plans, and wiring diagrams; and effective oral and written communication skills.  Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of interactive exhibit kiosks and shows essential.  A good working knowledge and the ability to troubleshoot computer, electronic, electrical, and audio/visual systems necessary.   Ability to establish and maintain positive and cooperative relationships with a culturally diverse general public, Team, and external customers essential.  Must be responsible for timely completion of assigned tasks; skilled in the use of a wide variety of hand and power tools; and able to lift and move heavy objects, walk excess of 3 miles per day, and work from lifts, ladders, and high platforms.  Occasional travel is required ranging from 1 to 4 weeks per year. Minimum of an Associates degree in an electronics, mechanical, or computer technology field required, with 3 years related experience preferred.


OBJECTIVE:  Perform electronic and mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance procedures on existing and future exhibits.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:

  1. Maintenance of museum exhibits including various electronic, mechanical, and audio/visual devices.
  2. Routine cleaning and completion of a preventive maintenance schedule.
  3. Major exhibit repair, modification, and retrofitting.  These tasks often involve coordination with sub-contractors, vendors, and COSI Designers & Engineers.
  4. Assist with the fabrication and installation of new permanent and temporary exhibits.
  5. Supervise daily operations of the exhibit floor by overseeing the “immediate concerns” walkie-talkie and proactively prioritizing reported challenges.
  6. Assist with the installation and tear-down of traveling exhibitions at COSI, as well as other institutions nationally.  Some travel is required.
  7. Keep abreast of technology and new developments related to the exhibit field.
  8. Keep shop and personal workspace neat, clean, organized, and well supplied.
  9. Maintain records and write reports as requested.
  10. Assist the Manager of Exhibit Operations with the cross training of new Team Members.
  11. Support COSI operations through participation in meetings as appropriate.
  12. Serve as an example to other COSI Team Members and Volunteers in matters of appearance, attitude, and performance in a manner best serving COSI Team Members, Volunteers, and Guests.
  13. In accordance with COSI's Guest Services Strategy and as opportunities present themselves, provide excellence in Guest Services by assuring Guest safety, using courtesy to drive each Guest interaction, by delivering the COSI show, and by keeping operations efficient.
  14. Perform other duties, within the scope of position, as assigned by the Manager of Exhibit Operations and/or Director of Exhibits.
